Fully agree, I'm not upset with them paying themselves for the dev time, Talishar is essential to FaB being where it is. I dislike how they did it much more than the fact that they did it.

150

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

I do want to add something here, Talishar is making far more than their server/mechanical upkeep costs. Before Rust Counter Ads, costs were ~$200/month(their numbers) for each of the two running it. They were taking home ~$2k/month each after costs. "Help us pay server costs" doesn't add up to me.

120

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

First was them moving the goalposts and saying they haven't. You haven't done this. Then it was that they wouldn't put a number for the end goal of what they want from them. If you can't put a number for "This is how much I need to do X."(Go full time, for example), then I'd have an issue.

Hey @fabtcg.com can you confirm if Calling Atlanta is going to be CC or Silver Age? I know quite a few people that already booked travel because the PT Coverage said CC but the event page is now saying Silver Age. (Pretty please be CC 🙏)

I think VGC has a significantly larger community than FaB, as well as being massively online-focused for that to happen for Zheng. That feels like part of my point tbh?

110

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 08/07/2026

I agree with all of this except one piece. The Rust Counters weren't for server costs. They made 7x their server costs before the Rust Counters, by the numbers they provided. This is about their time, which they're getting paid far less for than market software devs. But it's not mechanical upkeep.

040

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 08/07/2026

The game is growing steadily, but slowly relative to its size it seems like. YT content, and content in general, is often siloed by the hero it's about, too.

010

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 08/07/2026

Is that different from Patreon and Metafy? It feels like there's just not enough support to go around. The 1%(example) of the community that a creator has supporting them isn't enough for full time. The bigger the community, the more that 1% share is.(Current thinking, quite possibly wrong)

230

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 08/07/2026

I've accepted that this is not my full time job any time soon, if ever. Counting events, I'd be down thousands, not counting cards to play the game(bling excluded). I was ok with that. I could afford to do the things I did. But the discussion around it is frustrating to read. From both sides.

030

Kevin "Smurph" Murphy @smurphfab.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
