Thinking about what we mean and what we have meant by “struggle” today for Foucault’s 100th birthday. May we all be dogged in our efforts to think differently.
... As for what motivated me, it is quite simple; I would hope that in the eyes of some people it might be sufficient in itself. It was curiosity—the only kind of curiosity, in any case, that is worth acting upon with a degree of obstinacy: not the curiosity that seeks to assimilate what it is proper for one to know, but that which enables one to get free of oneself. After all, what would be the value of the passion for knowledge if it resulted only in a certain amount of knowledgeableness and not, in one way or another and to the extent possible, in the knower's straying afield of himself? There are times in life when the question of knowing if one can think differently than one thinks, and perceive differently than one sees, is absolutely necessary if one is to go on looking and reflecting at all.
People will say, perhaps, that these games with oneself would better be left backstage; or, at best, that they might properly form part of those preliminary exercises that are forgotten once they have served their purpose. But, then, what is philosophy today-philosophical activity, I mean— if it is not the critical work that thought brings to bear on itself? In what does it consist, if not in the endeavor to know how and to what extent it might be possible to think differently, instead of legitimating what is already known?

It is more fruitful to interpret the easy refusal of cosmopolitan and humanistic desires as a failure of political imagination[…]In order for those movements to move, they had to break down the obviousness of the national state as a principle of political culture. In the process, they fostered a degree of disaffection from those who were close by but whose economic and political interests were at odds with their own. This estrangement was boldly articulated in both outlooks. […] Their task was to fashion new networks of interconnectedness and solidarity that could resonate across boundaries, reach across distances, and evade other cultural and economic obstacles. That hope has faded away in the era of actually existing internationalism which has perversely created a political environment where cosmopolitan and translocal affiliations became suspect and are now virtually unthinkable outside of the limited codes of human-rights talk, medical emergency, and environmental catastrophe.

These restrictions on solidarity can be connected to a sense that the human sciences have become complacent, if they have not been actually undone by their reluctance to be made over as critical sciences of inhumanity. It is also linked to the limitations of philosophical anthropology as a vehicle for ethical and political reflection and to the wider constraints of a difficult moment in which, as I have said, the desire to dwell convivially with difference can appear naive, trifling, or misplaced in the face of deepening global inequalities and conflicts over resources, on one side, and a routine, almost banal multiculture on the other.
All of these difficulties can be examined through the refusal to consider the politics of race that colors all of them. Neither humanism nor antihumanism have been comfortable or enthusiastic when asked to address the destructive impact of race thinking and racial hierarchy…

…features of the latest U.S. imperial adventure. Even after that low ebb, half the country's yearning to be a different kind of place seemed worth noting, pausing over, and thinking with. A new set of issues had emerged to prompt the remaking of the nation's relationship with its imperial past and to feed the hope that its buried and disavowed colonial history might become useful at last as a guide to the evasive, multicultural future prefigured everywhere in the ordinary experiences of contact, cooperation, and conflict across the supposedly impermeable boundaries of race, culture, identity, and ethnicity.

Sent to my brother after the game
There was a moment today where Kudus scored a scrappy goal in 60' that would have evened the game 1-1 and the vibes seemed almost ok for about 30 seconds before everyone realized there was an offsides in the buildup. Those 30 seconds could plausibly be the happiest Tottenham fans experience all season...

An important 25th anniversary
Original cover for 2001 album “Party Music” by The CoupSPIN Magazine

THE COUP
Party Music
(75 Ark Entertainment)
By JOSHUA CLOVER
One wishes it were a richer claim that the Coup are the greatest polit-hop outfit since the heyday of Public Enemy. Comparatives aside, the Oakland duo of MC/producer Boots and DJ Pam the Funkstress have rivetingly rebalanced their ass-shaking and fist-waving on their fourth release. They've added Marvin's soul to their what's-going-on, boosted the Shock-G funk to cry havoc, and let slip the Atomic Dogs of war, like the "proletarian funkadelic parliamentarian" Boots claims to be on the irresistible
"Ride the Fence." They've also inflected the mix with OutKast's quick complexity; and, like 'Kast, the Coup have progressed from story rapping (see 1999's great "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night") to more mercurial rhymes. But even roaring like Dungeon Family dragons, they still get their Billy Bragg on, personalizing the political. "Tight" pitches woo over the Ohio Players' stickiest melody; "Wear Clean Draws," for Boots' daughter, is as tender as its arpeggio loop, yet fiercely butterfly-and-mermaid-free. Just as quickly, they're back to dropping bombs over Baghdad by the Bay with "Ghetto Manifesto" and "Get Up," in which they and guests Dead Prez swear to "fight the power like a motherfuckin' Zulu."
Sounds great. But it's a precarious position. The Coup's critique doesn't stop at racist police officers but the global capitalists they work for. There's no incense in their remedy; in fact, they're "pro-overthrow of the Hip-Hop Nation." They're pro-violence, pro-Molotov, their logo is a gun-toting sister, and when Boots suggests "you can do it funk or you can do it disco," he's listing "5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO." This risks becoming a musical Che T-shirt: a 15-dollar way to feel all smash-the-state-tastic. If so, Party Music isn't fundamentally different from gangsta fronting: a desolate fantasy about how badass we be.

But if we take their desires for reality, our own situation gets sticky: A hipoisie mag proclaiming the Coup's greatness from a glassy midtown Manhattan tower is just up on some radical chic of the week. It's not an irresolvable crisis, happily: The moment that makes this a great record is the moment your first brick shatters our first window. JOSHUA CLOVER

There are lots of good reasons to hate on Hot Topic, but wearing this T-Shirt constantly in middle school and high school made a profound and lasting contribution to my moral and historical consciousness and it's kind of hilarious that it was mass-produced and purchased at a suburban mall.

from Elaine Castillo's 2019 foreword to Carlos Bulosan's "America is in the Heart" phew
...people making community between their own vulnerabilities and the vulnerabilities of others, between their own flaws and mendacities and the flaws and mendacities of others. It's a line that reminds us that real communities aren't formed with only the best and brightest parts of who we are. Community is granular, piecemeal, and daily, fastened together one stolen ring at a time. And like much of the book, the line gives not comfort, but solace—solace in the old roots of the word where it once also meant to reconcile. This is also what critical reading of our histories makes possible: we cannot repair what we cannot reconcile; we cannot truly know what we will not truly see. America Is in the Heart asks nothing less of us than to try to see America, because it knows that only that which really sees us will really free us.

Representation is one of those words that's as inadequate as tolerance, when we're talking about the force that art can have in our lives. We know that no one wants to be simply represented, in the same way that no one wants to be simply tolerated. Representation doesn't come remotely close to describing the viscerally intimate shock of what it feels like when you encounter a book that seems to see you: the language you speak, the people you know, the town you call home. It just makes you feel: real. For people who are used to feeling real, used to always seeing and affirming their own reality—not just depicted, but centered—anywhere from the page to the screen to the echoing halls of government, the force of that feeling might easily be underestimated. But it is a force indeed. Its other name might be called justice, or love. Bulosan knew that force well; his pages radiate with it. It's what I suspect is really in the book's heart.

The core argument of the Taming of Chance www.cambridge.org/core/books/t...
The argument
Determinism was eroded during the nineteenth century and a
space was cleared for autonomous laws of chance. The idea of
human nature was displaced by a model of normal people with
laws of dispersion . These two transformations were parallel and
fed into each other. Chance made the world seem less capricious :
it was legitimated because it brought order out of chaos . The
greater the level of indeterminism in our conception of the world
and of people, the higher the expected level of control .
These events began with an avalanche of printed numbers at
the end of the Napoleonic era. Many kinds of human behaviour,
especially wrongdoings such as crime and suicide, were counted .
They appeared astonishingly regular from year to year. Statistical
laws of society seemed to spring from official tables of deviancy .
Data about averages and dispersions engendered the idea of
normal people, and led to new kinds of social engineering, new
ways to modify undesirable classes .
In the early yea􀑾s of the century, it was assumed that statistical
laws were reducible to underlying deterministic events, but the
apparent prevalence of such laws s lowly and erratically
undermined determinism. Statistical laws came to be regarded as
laws in their own right, and their sway was extended to natural
phenomena. A new kind of 'objective knowledge' came into
being, the product of new technologies for gaining information
about natural and social processes . There emerged new criteria
for what counted as evidence for knowledge of this kind. The
statistical laws that could thus be j ustified were used not only for
description but also for explainin g and understanding the course
of events . Chance became tamed, in the sense that it became the
very s tuff of the fundamental processes of nature and of society.

As we see an overdue lull in The Odyssey Discourse, I have been thinking more about why this story matters to us. Just because Nolan was super clumsy doesn’t mean he was totally offbase. Archeological investigation of “The Bronze Age Collapse” is super interesting!! youtu.be/choxcHXhZhE
How to avoid societal collapse

1. Have multiple contigency plans in place
2. Cultivate resilience to invasion (and “security forces”)
3. Be self-sufficient but avoid alienating allies
4. Be innovative and inventive
5. Prepare for extreme weather
6. Have a secure water supply

History keeps me awake at night
One day this kid will get larger. One day this kid will come to know something that causes a sensation equivalent to the separation of the earth from its axis. One day this kid will reach a point where he senses a division that isn't mathematical. One day this kid will feel something stir in his heart and throat and mouth. One day this kid will find something in his mind and body and soul that makes him hungry. One day this kid will do something that causes men who wear the uniforms of priests and rabbie, men who inhabit certain stone buildings, to call for his death.
One day politicians will enact legislation against this kid. One day families will give false information to their children and each child will pass that information down generationally to their families and that information will be designed to make existence intolerable for this kid. One day this kid will begin to experience all this activity in his environment and that activity and information will compell him to commit suicide or submit to danger in hopes of being murdered or submit to silence and invisibility. Or one day this kid will talk. When he begins to talk, men who develop a fear of this kid will attempt to silence him with strangling, fists, prison, suffocation, rape, intimidation, drugging, ropes, guns, laws, meance, roving gangs, bottles, knives, religion, decapitation. and immolation by fire. Doctors will pronounce this kid curable as if his brain were a virus. This kid will lose his constitutional rights against the government's invasion of his privacy. This kid will be faced with electro-shock, drugs, and conditioning therapies in laboratories tended by psychologists and research scientists. He will be subject to loss of home, civil rights, jobs, and all conceivable freedoms. All this will begin to happen in one or two years when he discovers he desires to place his naked body on the naked body of another boy. (David Wojnarowicz)

Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape.

Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy.
