Yes that’s a huge component of it too. It was very much a found family with very niche interests of very queer people. With the advent of algorithmic content being a primary driver in the fandom now it’s completely about holding an audience and generating content for ego.

100% people buy and trade fursonas like Pokémon cards. You have to have the newest shiniest styles from the popular makers or you are “old”. It’s commodified the simple self identification into this thing where you have to have outlandish designs and appeal to have value.

It’s hard to explain but Fursuits when I started in the fandom were more like extensions of identity and character. It feels like now they are just luxury accessories to most. Something you have to have to be part of the “in” group so they are approached very differently.
