Suguru had overestimated the muscle fibres required to create sound, unsure if his vocal folds would close around the inflammation in his throat, hoarse and sore from screaming. Though his words were scratchy things, they came out louder than he'd intended, ricocheting through the quiet of the cabin like gunfire. Indeed, Satoru's head snapped up like he'd been shot.

For a long moment, they simply stared at each other in the oppressive silence that roared over the rage of the storm outside. Then, at last, Satoru spoke.

‘No.’

‘Hmm.’ Suguru couldn’t say he wasn’t surprised. If not “my best friend”, then it had to be: ‘One and only?’

‘Since I’m a generous guy, I’ll give Suguru one last guess.’

But the self-satisfied sway to his voice told Suguru that, whatever was written on the candy heart, it had been chosen specifically to flummox him. With a smile, he propped his hands against the mattress and announced, ’I give up.’

When he crunched down on the sweet, grinding it to dust between his teeth to ensure that Satoru knew he was serious this time, the man cried out like it personally wounded him.

‘Come on, Suguru, I’ve never taken you for a quitter!’

‘And I’ve never taken you for someone who plays fair,’ he said easily, already resigned to his decision. ‘So what does it say, Satoru?’

There was a noise that sounded suspiciously like the overgrown child was blowing a raspberry at him. The sigh that followed was even more dramatic — but it didn’t stop Satoru from sounding positively gleeful when he finally revealed, ’It says sugar tits.’

’No, it doesn’t.’

‘Yes, it does.’

Suguru opened his mouth, then closed it, then opened it again. ‘They don’t write stuff like that on candy hearts.’

‘They do if you ask nicely,’ came Satoru’s voice, a little closer now. ‘Custom request, specially for Suguru.’

Predictably, his hands found their way to Suguru’s chest, grabbing and squeezing his pecs as if to emphasise his point.

‘For god’s sake,’ Suguru muttered, slapping those greedy fingers away as best he could with a blindfold affixed to his features. ‘You expect me to guess what it says on a custom made candy heart?’

‘Fair’s fair,’ Satoru sing songed, despite the fact that there was nothing fair about the situation in the slightest. ‘First point goes to me. Ready for the next one?’
