Incorrect. You simply need very fresh eggs. If you have to add vinegar the eggs aren’t fresh enough to bother poaching, as the vinegar does affect taste.

The sad thing is is that in his racist mind he’s right. This is something I learned in South Africa: so many of the areas one ‘can’t go to’ are simply unfounded racist projections of fear. So many times I’ve braced myself to take the risk of going somewhere in SA and found only normal, friendly life

Corruption certainly exists where I live. I just don’t call it communism regardless of the shape it takes

With respect, you Americans need to stop calling everything bad ‘communism’. This is capitalist corruption at its finest. As American as apple pie.

All this is true, though I’m not sure what the solution is. If I read the article correctly some boroughs have been getting a huge break on council tax for no discernible reason. In the long run surely a fairer distribution is better? Though I disagree with the pulling the rug out approach.

I’m band D in York and pay that, so the fair distribution sounds - well - fair. Although the sudden large rises are difficult, I agree.

Of course - the PQ… Still, feels to me given Quebec’s federal voting pattern currently that there’s not much appetite for secession… But we live in strange times indeed!

Surely it would be the best (for unity) / worst (for separatists) time for a referendum given Carney’s polling and the general volatility of the North American and world situation? Sounds like a bonkers time if I were a BQ person, or am I missing something?

Wow. That would be something. Where are those rumours coming from?

Let’s hope. I do get the feeling the UK is on a path to a saner politics - not that almost any movement could one be saner given where we are and have been.

Also I don’t think the language is reaching or vague due to a lacking of a clear idea. Rather, he’s saying Brexit was damaging, we need to be elsewhere as a country, and all options are on the table. As good a starting point as any. He wants the country to take him there - a more stable pathway.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I’m very happy with this. He’s very skilled at giving the RW press nothing to come at him with while also imo very clearly saying (without saying) that rejoin is an option if it is the best way forward and there is a strong will. I think he will use these years until the next GE to build consensus.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes - very early days. Given the nature of the UK’s right wing press, I’m ok with him having concentrated on controlling the narrative in his first days. It’s literally only been one month and 2 days. But things will need to start happening soon.

As I said, we’ll never know. I certainly would have liked Starmer to have been more pro-SM in his manifesto but I don’t think the country was seriously ready for going back to those debates at that time. You disagree, which is fine.

I think it’s very misleading to use Farage’s quote that way. He wasn’t saying we should not have left, only that the unicorn Brexit hadn’t arrived. David and your point is fair. Brexit consumed the UK and its politics for a decade, caution is understandable. It’s PTSD. But I do think it’s shifting.

The mess I’m talking about includes much more than the relationship with EU. I think a AB has had some progress with a slight sense of domestic positivity that’s been absent since Brexit. But he has also said he’d like UK to be in EU and not ruled it out in the next manifesto. To me that counts.
120
Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I’m not hugely optimistic about AB but I’m prepared to give him a chance. The polls you talk about weren’t the case in the run up to Starmer’s election. I do think AB and Labour are listening to those polls but understand why they don’t want to go there just now. Too early for me to agree with you

I think he needed this one to be…

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
If you think Starmer would’ve been able to win with a let’s rejoin now message and Burnham wouldn’t be being pilloried if he was doing the same on Starmer’s red line manifesto then maybe you’re right. But I think in the current UK environment that’s not realistic. I guess we’ll never know.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I see this as more of a UK electorate/media/identity issue. I’m not giving Labour a get out of jail free card by any means. But after the shit show since Brexit, I’m happy to see some positive steps - despite much shit remaining. A complete about face on a borrowed manifesto isn’t realistic imo.
020
Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
What the hell are you talking about? We are discussing the UK’s position with respect to the EU, not small boat crossings…
110
Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Explicitly backing rejoin has only just become an acceptable mainstream view. Burnham has said he’d like the UK to rejoin in his lifetime and hasn’t ruled out it being in the next manifesto. IMO that’s as good as we can expect at the moment.
010
Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Starmer would’ve likely not won if rejoining the SM was in his manifesto and likewise Burnham would be crucified if he breaks with the current manifesto without an election. That’s just the reality of it - and not one Labour created. 2/

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I don’t think that’s fair. Yes, Labour have the red lines, but they were understandable given the toxicity at the time. AB has made serious nods to ditching them in the next manifesto, and is wise not to now on a borrowed one. It’s a Tory mess, and too early to judge Labour’s attempts to clean it up

Haha. I’m not sure that’s accurate! Canadian teams do win the Stanley Cup - just not the Leafs, but that’s another story… The real reason is imo, is that there’s a lot of teams in the NHL and the way the draft works tends to ensure no team dominates for long. So many Canadians in US teams.

Definitely more than Johnson. And I’m no fan of either.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
For the record: I truly don’t have high hopes for Burnham. But calling Labour a hard Brexit party just because of the disaster of Starmer doesn’t seem helpful to me. (And I do think it would be stupid politics for Burnham to overturn the current manifesto with many already questioning his mandate.

Enjoy your certainty.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Is that true though? I’m far from a Burnham fanboy - very cautious - but he has taken over on a mandate with those pesky ‘red lines’. To go against them as a takeover PM would be folly in the current political climate. He has said as much. This is a strong statement. We ought to be glad he made it.

Absolutely - that 100% needs to happen.

We agree on quite a bit actually: America is a fascist menace that needs to be resisted at all costs. That much is obvious. But if you can’t take mild criticism for using Trump/America-style world outlook language (you were an NDP MP after all), perhaps you’re right.

Don’t like the use of ‘third world’ to describe Iran. They are a terrible government but that term is pure colonialism. Language matters.

Don’t like the use of ‘third world’ to describe Iran. Terrible terrible government but calling them third world is right out of the Trump dictionary. Language matters.

Not sure what you mean. I’m not the person you originally responded to, and I don’t piss doomer vinegar. But if there aren’t honest conversations about how America got where it is and how it can get out, well…
000
Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Yes - I was elaborating on that in response to the response somewhat trying to let most Americans off the hook. All Americans need to realise they are part of the whole and how social patterns need to change. Hating Trump and voting Democrat is far from enough.

Scott Lupasko @slupasko.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I wonder if America is salvageable and I’m definitely not cut from the same cloth… Unless America does a lot of soul searching as to how it got to where it is - and makes the necessary changes - it won’t turn the page on this chapter.

I think it’s more the system that produced a Trump presidency. Essentially a society dedicated to hyper consumerism and individualism and an unhealthy distrust of government regulation. Not a question of how many individuals, but of the society itself.

I’d literally be wary of entering the US - as a liberal Canadian with 3 passports - but besides this my anger at the country would never allow me to set foot in it until they’re all gone and apologies have been made.

I always can’t help but think ‘so?’ when reading her. Never get a sense of why I’m spending time with her very finely wrought characters. Like I’ve stumbled into a situation I’ve no place in. The endings disappoint as well.
