Opinion: We surveyed 50,674 Americans. This is what brings them together.

A landmark study tracked smartphone locations of 10 million Americans over Thanksgiving 2016, soon after President Trump’s election victory. When people shared a meal with family members who voted for the opposing party, they cut their visits short by 30 to 50 minutes.

Letter: Without naming the injustices that compromise is meant to remedy, LDS president’s words ring hollow

Dallin Oaks, president of the LDS Church, recently told an audience at the Washington National Cathedral that the Constitution “compels” a divided people to form coalitions. It is an elegant line, but it explains a process without addressing substance. Compromise is a method, not a policy: it specifies no terms, parties, or price, and it can advance justice or injustice alike.

Opinion: How Flock became public enemy No. 1

“The Emperor is a fan of Flock,” a man dressed as Darth Vader told a San Diego City Council meeting last month. Likening the A.I. surveillance vendor Flock Safety to the villainous galactic empire in “Star Wars,” he continued: “We must continue utilizing Flock technologies so that we can follow and surveil the rebel scum.”

Opinion: China is scared of A.l. Just not the way we are.

Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, recently said the world should collectively slow the development of A.I. until we get a better handle on the safety risks this new technology poses. Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk voiced their support for this plan.

Opinion: We are suffering the consequences of the conservative revolution that began in the 1980s

Somewhere right now, someone is streaming “Stranger Things,” queuing up a Eurythmics synth-pop playlist, or buying a pair of the high-waisted jeans and leg warmers her mother once wore unironically. In the White House, President Trump celebrates the decade that brought him to prominence with his retrogressive policies and his bawdy, gaudy aesthetics.

Opinion: Civil libertarians knew this would happen. We should have listened.

Six weeks after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Congress passed the Patriot Act. The vote was 357-66 in the House, and 98-1 in the Senate. Sen. Russ Feingold (D., Wis.), the chamber’s lone dissenter, said later that many of his colleagues hadn’t bothered to read it.

Opinion: Where’s our Roy Cohn? Sitting in the Oval Office.

At this point in the Trumpian arc, we’re all too familiar with the president’s methods: Deny everything; apologize for nothing. Hog the spotlight. Counterattack, counterpunch, countersue. Always declare victory, even when you lose (especially when you lose). Resentment sells. Nativism sells. Cruelty, if not yet normal, becomes the norm. Rules and traditions are for suckers; everyone is, if not corrupt, at least corruptible.

Opinion: Trump’s anti-immigrant coalition is cracking. Here’s what could come next.

This spring, the prominent white nationalist Nick Fuentes decided that the war on immigrants is a lost cause. “Country’s over,” he said on his Rumble show. “We’re already a nonwhite country.” Earlier this year, he declared immigration a “dead issue,” arguing that President Trump “blew it” by linking arms with oligarchs and waging war on Iran.

Letter: Trump doesn’t care about protecting our forests. Speak up to protect the Roadless Rule before it’s too late.

The Trump administration is attacking the policies that have kept our environment healthier and safer. Now, while fires ravage acres of forests, he wants to rescind the Roadless Rule, under the falsehood it will allow better management. Their argument is convincing, but not based on science and opens some of our oldest forests to mining and logging.

Opinion: Natalie Harp’s magnificent obsession: A perfect (taxpayer-funded) relationship.

Washington • I’ve spent my career watching officials maneuver and scheme, often in absurd ways, to get closer to presidents. But I’d never seen anything like the photo of Natalie Harp dashing after President Donald Trump’s golf cart in Scotland three years ago. I’d also never heard of a staffer jumping into the trunk of an SUV, as Harp did, when she was denied a seat in the motorcade.

As a Republican woman, public servant, member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wife, and mother, I know that holding fast to laws and principles of good governance is essential. It is vital to feel you can trust elected officials to do their best to meet their obligations, and to feel your best interests are being considered in decision-making and actions.

Letter: How do Utah leaders justify welcoming water-guzzling projects while asking Utahns to be waterwise?

Utah legislators and the governor are demanding that the people of Utah cut back on their outdoor water use, restricting us to two days a week. Letter: From Iran to the Epstein files to self-dealing, Trump’s defined by corruption, failures and lies. At least Nixon resigned.

In May of 2017, The Tribune published my op-ed letter in which I concluded, “Trump will make Nixon look like a choir boy.” After five months of Trump 1.0, I had heard enough of Trump’s lies to calculate that he would tell over 30,000 of them over his first term as president. Letter: With Trump’s move to shrink our monuments, Utah’s delegation again showed their true colors. Enough of that.

Most of Utah’s political delegation was on hand at the White House as Trump signed the declarations reducing Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Bears Ears National Monument. Surely, Mike Lee, John Curtis, Celeste Maloy, Mike Kennedy, Blake Moore and Gov. Cox were aware of recent polling showing that over 70% of Utahns support acreages determined by years of planning by multi-stakeholder groups. This did not deter them from their giddiness and laughter during the “ceremony” as they celebrated the evisceration of protection for these landscapes many consider sacred, or the lies they told during interviews to justify their actions.
