Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I only know how to use the tweet apps to talk about what I've been listening to - all my takes on current events are not tweet-worthy and my personal dramas are too slow and dull for anything but the therapist's office. 030

Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026I am not totally sure what first steps look like in terms of forming these standards, but I wanted to at least jot down this thought to come back to. (7/7) 020
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Without standardized metadata, people are left to "organize their collection" by themselves, which most people don't like to spend a ton of time on. (6/7) 110
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Music on the other hand, the APIs are not quite there yet. MusicBrainz, Discogs, LastFM - these have a ton of data and that's great, but there's a lot missing. Even something as common as a "feature" field is mostly missing - from APIs, from ID3 tags, from jukebox software in general. (5/7) 120
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026For movies we have several comprehensive APIs and more-or-less standardized sets of metadata. TMDB, OMDB, Trakt, et. al. These are where Letterboxd et. al. get their data from, and they have a pretty decent & standardized set of data. An impressive feat for such a complex and involved medium! (4/7) 110
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026As someone who's spent an embarrassing number of hours over the years on maintaining my library, it seems to me this is the most fundamental missing piece that ought to be in place before we can really have nice music libraries without spending innumerable hours on data entry. (3/7) 110
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Each jukebox software has its own metadata implementation, prioritizing certain frames and missing others, handling metadata in its own unique way, none of which are complete, or interoperable. (2/7) 110
Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Been thinking a lot recently about first steps toward good jukebox software (like Plex or Swinsian - software that uses files you own), and one of the very first steps to me seems to be standardization of music metadata. Basically, ID3 tag frames, and keeping those in sync with a database. (1/7) 131

Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 15/04/2026This. Brendan Landis @slownames.bsky.social · 09/04/2025Maybe if I get the SeatGeek I'll have a web site or a plastic box with a bunch of controls on it, and like e.g. if I turn one of the knobs up all the way then it'll buy 127 XBoxes or jars of pickles or packages of adult diapers from amazon? 110
