It was clearly widespread on campus and they were surprised by it.

They gave me a new one (with a 2050 expiration date!)— I wonder if something happened behind the scenes that passes all of a sudden were no longer autorenewed or somehow all of a sudden had expiration dates.

I work for usc and pay for their e-pass. Some time around late September/early October mine started saying “expiring soon” on the TAP readers, and then we got an email from the campus office saying that a bunch of passes were expiring and there’s no way of knowing which ones until they stop working.

PCH in Orange County is very different from Big Sur. To my knowledge this section hasn’t ever been rebuilt.

There’s always money for widening— and it probably also won’t need endless rounds of stakeholder consultation.

lol. I get emails from PBS Newshour nearly every week telling me what David Brooks has said. They have excellent reporters who report on important things every week, and that’s what they choose to highlight. It’s befuddling!

I think part of it is that people drink less. If you go to dinner at someone’s house and nobody’s drinking… it’s a briefer and often less convivial experience. That’s my experience.

That parking lot is at 10-20% capacity most days when I pass by; maybe it needs to be retained.

I love them. I think the most impactful technological innovations over the past 10 years have been in grapes. At this rate I’m expecting Grilled Cheese varieties of grapes any moment.

Yeah— these delayed trains are always the ones that are absolutely rammed. By the time they get to Pasadena there’s a hung-over post-rave feel as all the survivors slump down and watch the detritus roll (and float) around on the sticky floor.

I don’t advocate Waymo as a transportation solution. I think it’s demonstrably a better customer experience than its closest competitor: rideshare.

sloshadile.bsky.social @sloshadile.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I realize that’s in part due to the relatively new and clean fleet of vehicles which isn’t inherent in the technology, but there’s a lot to be said for not having to deal with the uncertainty of a rideshare driver.

I don’t like the idea of rejecting an innovation because the job is currently done by (in this case, unregulated and) poorly paid humans. I’ve used Waymos 3x when my local bus system failed me. They were much better experiences for me as a passenger than Lyft would have been.

It was a real paradigm shifter when I (rural) visited my (urban) cousins and my aunt sent them out to buy an avocado. “A whole trip? To buy an avocado?” And my 13 year old cousins walked back 5 minutes later with an avocado. Oh! Not every shopping trip needs to be an expedition!

What strikes me most about that mailer is that it’s entirely generic. There’s not one word that indicates that he knows where his district is, what local issues are, or even what state he represents.

Yes. My commute is ~15 miles (Pasadena to USC). It’s the perfect length for an e-bike commute (and ‘regular’ bike when I want to) but unfortunately there is simply no good route due to a failure in leadership in numerous areas.

That’s really nice to hear, and it’s particularly good to hear that someone recognizes when they have leverage. I hope some City Councilors listen.

Statements like that from the “former city planner” simply serve as confirmation to me that yes: these are exactly the type of people in charge of planning our city. They don’t understand LA, they have learned no lessons from cities around the world, and they like the status quo.

Yes. I pay $40/month for a transit pass (Los Angeles) and parking would be $95/month. That $660 ain’t nothing, and clearly that’s ignoring any costs of ownership— it’s literally just how much less my commute paycheck deduction is than my colleagues’.

This cruiser was driving alongside my train this morning. The driver was fully texting with both hands off the wheel for a significant duration. I tried to take a photo but didn’t get one. What really struck me (in addition to his negligent behavior) was just how old this car is. It’s a heap!

In a “public consultation” a planner for the city of Pasadena recently said that creating “greenways” on portions of 3 streets was on an “expedited timeline”— it had only taken 12 years to reach this round of consultation.
