I think you can call it research. Some character at some point will have a moment with doughnuts.

With a dog as photogenic as Chester, it would be wrong to not take pictures. The cuteness must be photographed!

Hoping you have a policy where overstaying her reservation will eventually allow you to block her. Which will be more drama, but at least she will get some consequences for making everyone's day worse.

I will do that, and I will check again with the statewide group that was working on getting equipment to share!

Nice! If they have an affordable way to detect heavy metals in historical bindings, please share. All the current portable spectroscopy systems are waaaay outside of the budget in non-R1 schools.

Typo! It's 473 days, not 670.

The stain-causers only need to keep it in their pants for another 670 days. That's asking a lot, so I will settle for them wiping up after themselves for the next year and 4 months.

Circulation staff reporting in, at my place it's generally the walls and floor rather than the books. I sincerely hope I can retire without having to talk to janitorial, administration, or campus police about semen again.

Am reminded once again that email is a non-Newtonian fluid. . . . . (If you run hard enough you can stay on top of it, but if you slow down or go softly you sink.)

This seems like an opportunity to also demonstrate responsible PPE use! And if the won't go for that, maybe pitch a heat gun on a stand and a splash shield?

I do remember being excited about wheelchair ramps as a kid in the 80s, because they were unusual and fun to play on. Access is still not great, but it's definitely better than it was

The British Library is a whole different sad story. Go read about their cyber attack and the lack of recovery. But yes, a centralized repository is the way to go if the government will actually fund it

SKD @slknightdavis.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Depends on the library. 100 year old academic journals get thrown out all the time because you cannot get rid of JSTOR dupes any other way. Nobody wants or will take hundreds of running feet of self-destructing paper that is searchable online.

Yes! I have done plenty of Last Copy forms. UIUC can warehouse some outdated computer manual from 1998 and then anyone that might actually need it can get it from then. I get a shelf of books where not all the books are older than the students.

Shep is 100% correct. I am an academic librarian and I have personally dumpstered hundreds of books and helped to discard thousands more. Shelf space is expensive. Getting new things means making space by discarding.

It's not just green! There are a variety of toxic heavy metals that might be in pre-1900 pigments. And that's why you get a free bag, gloves, and educational bookmark with the pre-1900 books in their original binding at my library.

As I understand it, the neurotypicals automatically tune out lots of things. They don't know they do it and it's not a conscious choice. Their brains just operate with sensory filters all the time.

This is an unhelpful reply, but thinking about your request has made the nasty website work I need to do today look so very much more appealing. Rural Midwest checking in, GPS will often try to use unsafe bridges, non-existant roads, or route in a giant loop for no reason. One quickly learns to zoom out and check the route before starting and making it re-route anything where it selected a 1-lane road.

There is a feral family of pheasants that live near my house. US pheasants are descended from the escapes of bored farmers. The pheasants do their best to fill the role of our critically endangered prairie chickens, but their poor Asiatic-descended bodies are not correctly adapted for North America

I use the Taco Bell inflation index. In my day (30 years ago), anyone could eat like a king for $5 at Taco Bell. Now it takes $25-30 and is going up all the time. And that's why I now usually go to the local place across the street that has real meat and good tomatoes.
