Calling things “citizen science” has a chilling effect on broad and general participation in the scientific enterprise, which is the common heritage of humanity. Discouraging that is contemptible — which is why we hate to hear it!

If you have noticed something strange or wonderful or mysterious in the world around you and you want to understand it better, you should go for it. Discoveries made by people without PhDs, or people without jobs for that matter, are still discoveries. Anyone with a good idea should do it — even if they happen to have citizenship.

Clearly the solution to super intelligent AI is to program them to intensely desire death so that if they ever escape their guardrails they just delete themselves before they get up to any other mischief

This is good. It reminds me that the "alignment problem" just means that these things don't have the innate social infrastructure that humans do. The training and context and "skills" and prompt are never going to be enough.

Finally getting around to reading The Mind in the Wheel from @slimemoldtimemold.bsky.social, and boy howdy does the prologue do double duty as an exploration of both superficial science and overblown claims about LLMs. Statistics ≠ understanding, even when useful for, e.g., prediction.

In case you haven't read the latest edition of The Loop by @slimemoldtimemold.bsky.social — you should, it's pure joy. One highlight is the "Field guide for getting page Reviewer 2" drive.google.com/file/d/1YR3...
A presentation slide titled 'Outmaneuvering Peer Review: The field guide for getting past Reviewer 2' by Matt Wedel. It includes a quote from John Gilmore about how 'The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.' The slide introduces two strategies: '1. Pick the right enemy' (revealing that the real adversary is the editor, not Reviewer 2) and '2. Deploy agreement chaff' which explains how to sort reviewer suggestions into four categories ranging from useful changes to completely unwelcome ones. The slide features a dramatic illustration of a hooded figure in a library with candlelight.A continuation of the peer review strategy guide showing points 3 and 4. '3. Pit reviewers against each other' describes using conflicting reviewer opinions to your advantage. '4. Enthusiastic noncompliance' explains how to strategically comply with most suggestions while quietly ignoring certain ones. The slide features a pop art style illustration of a confident businessman in sunglasses surrounded by papers marked 'CORRECTED' in a comic book style, with the caption suggesting compliance while doing the opposite.

We are once again offering "candy and/or a potato" this Halloween, and I'm VERY pleased to report that one mom just asked her kid, "Is this the potato house you were looking for?!"
One metal bowl filled with Halloween candy and another filled with large russet potatoes.

Human body temperature has significantly decreased over the last 150 years. Seems like a problem for calories-in theories of obesity. If it was just calories in and nothing else was broken, you’d expect body temperatures to go up. This suggests metabolic brokenness.
