This post convinced me that tech illiteracy is an epidemic. if you know anything about computers it’s obvious this is almost certainly not a security concern and is also entirely irrelevant unless you are already using LLM agents on your computer

I’ve been using qutebrowser for seven years, and I just found out about this now. I just wanted to say I cannot be more thankful for your hard work, and I am so happy that you can now do it as your true self. You’re a gift to the world!

Genuinely someone needs to figure out what exactly drives some people to have a best–favourite distinction and others not. I feel this the most fundamental difference in how people approach art

it’s crazy how many non-DTT programmers think that type-level computation is a good idea in DTT. As soon as you start using a DTT language you realize type-level computation should be avoided at all costs

You hear a lot about laziness when you start learning Haskell, but what they don’t tell you is that Haskell is still the only lazy language since its creation and maybe this is for a reason

Isn’t it? “I don’t like most desserts, but I like crumble.” “I like crumble, but I don’t like most desserts.” seems equivalent to me I would suggest is a modal logic where □P means “we expect that P”, and ◇P means “it is possible that P” “A but B” is A and B, but only defined when □(A→B)

the absence of sex or romance doesn’t mean a character is aro or ace. It just means it wasn’t included in the story. If it’s an obvious omission, yes it’s valid to criticize. It would also be valid to explicitly state they’re aro/ace. But that requires broaching the subject of romance/sex!

Defending a story’s inability to broach queer relationships or sex because “the characters are aro/ace” when there is zero textual evidence they are aro or ace is just defending queerphobia

C++26: Trivial infinite loops are no longer undefined behaviour
Let’s start with a question! Is this program well-defined? 1 2 3 4 int main() { while (true) ; } If you said yes, you’d be wrong — at least before C++26. A while (true); loop with no side effects used...

People posting Aella tweets like these is the same energy as the Stallman toe thing. Focussing on subjectively gross but ultimately unimportant stuff when there’s actual criticisms of the person and their beliefs to be had. Aella has some really regressive beliefs, they aren’t hard to find

“I used Peano arithmetic” no you didn’t you just used a unary encoding of the natural numbers. it’s not Peano arithmetic if you don’t have induction

Reddit is blinded by woman-hate and therefore is only able to interpret a woman being vulnerable as expressing disdain toward men. It’s very obvious he’s presented as an innocent character toward which resentment has inadvertently built up on the part of our POV character

It’s not a bad comic. It’s not uncommon to realize that you are conversationally incompatible with someone. Doesn’t reflect on their character, but does strain the interpersonal relationship. If it’s romantic it can feel especially difficult to navigate, particularly combined with other issues

I don’t know what I expected from Reddit, but the response to the “I don’t like my boyfriend” comic has been startlingly misogynistic

the laws of thermodynamics are great for situations where you’re modelling heat transfer in a closed system. but in the real world, you need to go to work; so we need something more general, like cars

To be clear, I am against age verification in all forms – all this fearmongering about pornography is a clear right-wing distraction from real issues in society. But you shouldn’t spread misinformation either.

The extent to which people brazenly lie about this has me losing faith in society discord claimed that k-id dose not retain data. they did not claim their third-party support system does not retain data. a third-party support system they not longer use leaked data. there is zero evidence of lying

actually I realize this is pretty much the same as what the nlab says lol. I still marginally prefer “quotient finite” over “finitely indexed” though
000
sleeping-machines.bsky.social @sleeping-machines.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
it’s intuitive because it describes what operations the sets are closed under. and I think “quotient finite” is easier to remember than “Kuratowski”

sleeping-machines.bsky.social @sleeping-machines.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
There are 4 basic distinct notions of finiteness in constructive mathematics. they unfortunately lack standardized names. I propose: 1. finite: bijection n≃S 2. subfinite: injection S↪n 3. quotient finite: surjection n→S 4. subquotient finite: partial surjection n→S (or multivalued injection S↪n)

My least favourite thing about Wikipedia is that the page “List of Internet top-level domains” does not list every Internet top-level domain. In fact, I’m not aware there is a list of every top-level domain. I have been annoyed by this at least 5 separate times

so instead you have to invent a nebulous character who would have supported anti–climate change regulation if not for seeing climate change activists and thinking that they could have been mildly inconvenienced by them.
000
sleeping-machines.bsky.social @sleeping-machines.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
These days you can’t tell people climate change isn’t happening because they can see it with their own eyes; you can’t say that you disagree with climate protests because obviously something needs to be done
100
sleeping-machines.bsky.social @sleeping-machines.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Optimistically, I think the whole “[climate change protest group] are actually pro–climate change because their protests make climate activism look bad” argument is just a last-ditch effort by climate deniers

DHH on Rust: Rust. I hate Rust. With a passion. Rust to me is like pouring acid in my eyes when I have to look at it.

Why do you hate Rust?

It is, in my opinion, the ugliest programming language that has been invented in probably the last 40 years. So it’s the opposite of Rails.

it’s sometimes said that happiness is fairly consistent across binary genders. fine, but women have a lower quality of life on average and that’s what matters
000
sleeping-machines.bsky.social @sleeping-machines.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
People focus on “happiness” a lot, but what makes someone happy is pretty nebulous. “quality of life” is both easier to measure and more important for decision-making
