Congratulations to Dr. Nate Byers who was recently promoted to Laboratory Director! Dr. Byers was previously the district's molecular biologist! Dr. Byers started with SLCMAD in 2023 after working at the CDC for several years. We're looking forward to him leading the lab! Congratulations, Dr. Byers!

Congratulations to SLCMAD's new Assistant Director, Dr. Christopher Bibbs! Dr. Bibbs was the Laboratory Director previously & has been with the district since 2022. Before coming to SLCMAD, he worked at Central Life Sciences. We're excited to see him in this new position! Congratulations, Dr. Bibbs!

Today is World Mosquito Day! Mosquitoes are the world's deadliest animal, impacting humans and other animals. Be mosquito aware when spending time outdoors and traveling. Wear an EPA-registered insect repellent and cover up any exposed skin to reduce mosquito bites. #worldmosquitoday

The SLCMAD has detected #WestNilevirus (WNV) positive mosquito samples, and Box Elder County has detected its first WNV human case. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent & cover up exposed skin to avoid bites. The mosquitoes that carry WNV are most active at dusk and dawn.

A National Mosquito Control Awareness Week x National Pollinator Week crossover! DYK there is a non biting mosquito? Meet Toxorhynchites, aka the elephant mosquito. Adults feed on nectar, sugar, & sap. Their larvae feed on other mosquito larvae and have been used as biological controls before. 🦟

It's #nationalmosquitocontrolawarenessweek! 🦟 Do you know the mosquito life cycle? Egg --> larva --> pupa --> adult. The first three stages need water to survive! Empty & drain standing water to reduce mosquitoes. 🦟

The District will be using the Skeeter Meter; a communication tool created by the CDC to help spread local awareness of West Nile virus (WNV) risk. While testing for WNV doesn't start until July for the District, this tool will demonstrate the community's risk level throughout the season. 🦟

Surveillance of mosquitoes makes up a large portion of our work at SLCMAD. One trap used by the district is a carbon dioxide (CO2) baited trap. CO2 is a major attractant for female mosquitoes and lets them know when a host is nearby. Check out this paper from SLCMAD! doi.org/10.1371/jour...

Early this week the district set several adult mosquito surveillance traps. Two trap sites had higher mosquito numbers. The traps primarily consist of Culex pipiens, Culex tarsalis, and Culiseta inornata. As the season progresses, trapping will be moved from once per week to twice. 🦟

Next month we'll begin trapping for adult mosquitoes in a few locations to see where our early season mosquitoes are. We use two main traps, one is a carbon dioxide (CO2) trap that lures in mosquitoes with CO2, & the other is a gravid trap that attracts mosquitoes with smelly hay infused water.

DYK that mosquito-borne diseases affect more than just us? West Nile virus (WNV) can affect birds and horses. There are vaccines for horses to help protect them against WNV and western equine encephalitis virus. Take preventive measures and get your equines protected against mosquitoes! 🐴🦟
