sometimes i wonder if it would be beneficial to just lean into the whole "i am [marginalized identity], i will provide your [event/project/publisher] with [token minority] art content" thing but also like i would like my art to be appreciated on its own merits rather than boxing myself into a niche

for clarity i use a masculine name day-to-day but live in a country that does not allow me to legally change it so my much more overtly feminine legal name goes on all my invoices and tax info and etc

of course one can't get into everything and sometimes there's just too much competition or your style isn't a good match or etc but even with an ultimately small sample size it was kind of shocking to realize this was the one factor that aligned perfectly with the acceptance/rejection split

i tabled at several large comic conventions this year but have suddenly been dealing with a string of rejections from much smaller events and in trying to figure out what had changed i realized all the recent ones had required my legal info up front within the application itself

kind of shocking that the cons i've applied to and been accepted into this year vs the ones i've been rejected from are also a perfect split between cons i've applied to with a "male" name on the submission form vs ones i applied to with "female" legal info

my favorite pens have consistently been a specific brand i've found on the ground in the woods, with the bizarre caveat that i've had this same situation happen to me like three times in several different locations and it was somehow the exact same model of pen each time

as time goes on i feel more and more like the barrier for entry is so much lower irl. online i've always struggled to "break in" without success but in person i go to small cons and comics events and i'll run into people who recognize me from my work they bought almost a decade ago

of course many people have a lot to say specifically abt their experience of being trans & don't mind much that ppl want them to make art about it but like. the ostensible support for trans creators seems to melt when they want to make art about anything else in many ways. at least it feels that way

i feel like it goes underdiscussed but i find the pressure to self-tokenize frustrating. some probably take to it better than others but i'm interested in making art abt things other than unmetaphorized, comprehensible depictions of Being Trans & i end up feeling locked out of a lot of opportunities

idk that this is helpful but i've found that "passing" is significantly more dependent on the public's cultural awareness of what a trans person is than on anything i actually do and people will make bizarre split-second judgements off unexpected traits. at least for me that takes some weight off

mostly just wanted to offer condolences- it's one of those things where even if you pursue finding a cause (...who has the money to test for stuff like androgen insensitivity) there often isn't any magic solution. fingers crossed stuff starts working for you in the long-term, sometimes it takes ages
