Trump 2 is more ideologically unified because now the establishment is gone and Trump gets along better with the crazies

Trump 1 was surrounded by establishment Republicans, who were occasionally capable of fear, shame, and even guilt. Trump himself is shameless so there was more friction between both himself and his staff, but also between his moderate staffers and the alt-right ones

Both Trump administrations have been characterized by vicious infighting between various republican factions trying to maneuver him as their figurehead. The difference with Trump 2 is that, in his 4 years in the wilderness, Trump fully fell in with the nazis and conspiracists

yeah they're cringe but I don't understand someone who would say that that cringe gap year wasn't life-changing for that person

this conversation is so fucking pointless now can we drop "life-changing" and just agree that $30 000 is a lot of money and go home?

Matt references median americans all the time. Because he's got terminal economist-brain and wants to ignore the 50% of people who sit below the median. But either way I don't think $30,000 is negligible even to the median American.

Yes? Money has marginal utility? $30k isnt the same to everyone

comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
No I think you literally just said it means it will remove a person from poverty and keep them out of poverty. Of course, no amount of money will ever guarantee that in a capitalist economy, so you are free to shit on any proposed windfall as ultimately meaningless.

Like I said. You are not in a position where a new car would be life-changing for you. Thanks for confirming?

I'm glad you are not in a position in your life where a new car would be life-changing for you.

The issue here is that when I hear "life-changing money" i think "enough money to get a car that doesn't break down every few months," whereas you seem to think it means "enough money to change your income bracket" and idk what to tell you Matt I think that's a class difference

comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
So then for you, "life-changing" money is however much money it takes to reliably get out of poverty and stay out of it? How, then, can you say that *any* amount of money is or isn't life-changing when people who receive large windfalls often fall back into poverty, no matter how large it is?

If it's good enough for you to give up a year of your life, or for you to pay $30,000 for it, then yes. That pie was probably life-changing for you.

comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
I understand what life-changing means just fine. The problem is that you don't understand what $30,000 means.

You don't think not working is a night-and-day difference from working daily? You don't think owning a house is a night-and-day difference from renting? You don't think owning a car is a night-and-day difference from taking the bus everywhere?
110 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
do you think that *a year of your life* is worth a slice of pie?
130 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
Do you think a $4 piece of pie is comparable to $30,000? Are you sure you're a normal person?

I chose hiking the Appalachian Trail -- an activity that is undoubtedly life-changing but also economically worthless -- to highlight this.

I think it speaks to the spiritual decay of our society that so many people seem incapable of understanding a $30k lump-sum payment as anything more than a miniscule increase of someone's lifetime net-worth. As though there is nothing in human life that cannot be measured in terms of ROI
130 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 19h
You could literally do nothing eith that year and it'd still be life changing

Yes. Obviously.

Not sure about the *median* American, but for many Americans $30,000 is almost a year of income post-tax. I just don't understand how you could consider that not life-changing. That's a new car, or a down-payment on a house. It's not earth-shattering, but it's big!
0170 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 20h
If I received $30,000 right now, I could take an entire year off and do more or less whatever I wanted. I could walk the Appalachian Trail, I could write a book, whatever. Is that not life-changing just because once the money ran out I'd be back to a similar economic position as when I started?

Wait we were only talking abt $30k, are you now seriously suggesting that winning the *lottery* isn't a life-changing amount of money? If this is our metric for "life changing money" it's beginning to seem like there is no amount of money that you would consider "life-changing"

most of the american economy is just an end-game resource sink for people who've already won but are too addicted to numbers to stop playing

ok but seriously what changed in the last couple of months where suddenly Britain is actually implementing a serious, for-real sanctions regime against Israel? I thought this was the country that declared Palestine protesters literal terrorists?

collapse, demand for the models themselves could also collapse, and suddenly even the big model companies (which i understand to already be in an uncertain financial position themselves) could find themselves in jeopardy

i have no doubt that AI will still be around in some form 50 years from now. but i'm not convinced that it will remain as ubiquitous as it is today. i'm not a financial expert but it seems like demand for AI is propped up by a lot of companies which are themselves unprofitable. if enough of them

it's not at all clear to me that we shouldn't ever just punish people, not because they haven't been rehabilitated, but because what they did was wrong and as a society we want to express in the clearest possible terms that their behavior will not be tolerated

generally i think leftists are too down on retribution as a concept. obviously the carceral state as it exists is horrific, but there's a reason basically every society that has ever had to deal with wrongdoing of any kind has factored retribution into their solution

Feels like every poll in every election since i was 16 has severely underestimated Republican performance. I don't know if that's strictly true, but I've learned to just assume that Republicans are actually 2-3 points ahead of wherever they're polling

So in your view the issue (beyond the sexual assault, obviously) is that he didn't privately tell his friends and collaborators beforehand?
110 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
i mean yeah, if our approach to sexual misconduct is that we can only talk about it if the victim is leading the conversation, that'd just prevent most allegations from ever coming to light. idk I guess I'm just not sure exactly how we would want him to address this before it came out like this
230 0
comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Would it have been better if he had talked about this publicly and we had a whole drama cycle about it years ago? I don't know but that certainly wouldn't have been very respectful to the victim

comfít @sl33peragent.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Like would this situation be meaningfully improved if the exact same allegations had come to light, but everyone he collaborated with was like "yeah, i knew the whole time and didn't say anything"
