A month later, the Indonesian Navy seized the Silver Sea 2. The investigation and satellite tracking helped lead to the ID and repatriation of more than 2,000 workers, the rescue of additional fishers from alleged slavery, and a Myanmar fisher’s reunion with his family after 22 years in captivity.

That makes it harder for workers to escape and obscures where seafood comes from. In 2015, satellite vessel tracking helped us identify a suspicious movement pattern involving the refrigerated cargo ship Silver Sea 2. We shared our findings with journalists at @apnews.com.

Some endure 20-hour shifts, violence, and little or no pay while the seafood they catch enters global supply chains. One way these operations stay hidden is through transshipment: fishing vessels transfer their catch to refrigerated cargo ships at sea to avoid returning to port for long stretches.

SkyTruth 🛰️ @skytruth.org · 25/08/2026
🐟 What can satellites reveal about forced labor at sea? A devastating hidden cost of the global fishing industry: modern slavery. Migrant workers from Southeast Asia have been kidnapped, trafficked, or deceived into working aboard fishing vessels in remote waters.
