China has implemented a #LightPollution law: www.cali-light.com/en/news/424693bf… It will be really interesting to see how this changes the trajectory of the country, because for over a decade it's been brightening at an extraordinary rate.
On August 15, 2026, the Environmental Code of the People’s Republic of China (hereinafter referred to
as the “"Code") will officially come into force. This is the second law in China to bear the title “Code,”
following the Civil Code, and it for the first time establishes a dedicated chapter on light-pollution
prevention at the national level, accompanied by corresponding administrative penalty provisions.
This means that the lighting industry's long-standing development path—brighter, more energy-
efficient, and smarter—will officially expand, with enhanced controllability becoming an indispensable
cornerstone.

Great five minute read about #urban #Lighting and #LightPollution from @JohnBarentine: www.darkskyconsulting.com/blog/tucs…
Text: For decades, dark-sky advocates and municipal lighting managers were often viewed as opposing sides. One side advocated for nighttime preservation and the other for urban safety. Decision makers came to believe that a city could have one or the other, but not both. The experiences of Tucson, Vienna, and Metz prove that this binary choice is false.Image of a city at night with a red streak of light near the river. Text underneath says "To safeguard sensitive aquatic and terrestrial wildlife while keeping pedestrian paths safe, Metz installed motion-activated, ultra-warm 1000 K (amber-red) LED luminaires along the riverbank (right). By removing short-wavelength blue light and illuminating only when human presence is detected, the system drastically cuts skyglow-causing light scatter and protects nocturnal ecosystems. Evidence for geocentrism:

We don’t have horrible winds at the equator (~1700 km/h)
No observation of stellar parallax – means the stars must be unthinkably far away
Brightness of Venus doesn’t change that much (so it must always be closer to the Earth than the sun is)
Everything we observe seems to want to go towards the center of the Earth

[US targeting during war] If you have some time, this article is worth a read: www.theguardian.com/news/2026/mar/2…
Text screenshot:

In the days after the strike, the charisma of AI organised the entire political
conversation around the technology: whether Claude hallucinated, whether
the model was aligned, whether Anthropic bore responsibility for its
deployment. The constitutional question of who authorised this war and the
legal question of whether this strike constitutes a war crime were displaced
by a technical question that is easier to ask and impossible to answer in the
terms it set. The Claude debate absorbed the energy. That is what charisma
does.

It has also occluded something deeper: the human decisions that led to the
killing of between 175 and 180 people, most of them girls between the ages of
seven and 12. Someone decided to compress the kill chain. Someone decided
that deliberation was latency. Someone decided to build a system that
produces 1,000 targeting decisions an hour and call them high-quality.
Someone decided to start this war. Several hundred people are sitting on
Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an “Al problem” gives those
decisions, and those people, a place to hide.

This is amazing: it turns out that at least one ant species has come up with a way to use the moon as a compass - despite the fact that the moon's position in the sky changes dramatically night after night. Short commentary […] [Original post on fediscience.org]
Screenshot of text from the article:

Unlike the sun and the stars — both of which are successfully harnessed for navigation by animals and humans alike'?3 —
the moon is a notoriously fickle navigational cue. Unlike the sun, which day after day predictably rises and sets at roughly
the same place and time, and travels approximately across the same celestial trajectory, the moon — if present at all —
rises and sets at different times, and has a different visible shape and brightness, from one night to the next. Thus, on a
bright sunny day, it is not hard to imagine how a migratory bird®, Monarch butterfly* or hoverfly® could instinctively know
where the sun will be in the sky during the course of the day and accordingly compensate for the sun’s position to maintain a
constant heading direction during a long migration. Indeed, such ‘time-compensated sun compasses’ are well known in day-
active migrants, and they need the input of an inbuilt circadian clock to adjust course direction relative to the predicted
position of the sun at each time of day®. That a time-compensated moon compass might exist has never been considered —
the fickle and difficult-to-predict nature of the moon would seemingly rule out such a possibility. But now, in a landmark new
study reported in this issue of Current Biology’, a time-compensated moon compass has been found in a nocturnal ant.

The Government of the United States is contending for something much greater than mere
rights of property or privileges of commerce. It is contending for nothing less high and sacred
than the rights of humanity, which every Government honors itself in respecting and which no
Government is justified in resigning on behalf of those under its care and authority.
Only her actual resistance to capture or refusal to stop when ordered to do so for the purpose
of visit could have afforded the commander of the submarine any justification for so much as
putting the lives of those on board the ship in jeopardy. This principle the Government of the
United States understands the explicit instructions issued on August 3, 1914, by the Imperial
German Admiralty to its commanders at sea to have recognized and embodied, as do the
naval codes of all other nations, and upon it every traveler and seaman had a right to
depend.
It is upon this principle of humanity as well as upon the law founded upon this principle that
the United States must stand.
