I mostly ramble about trivial nerd stuff - or at least I'd like to, but I spend a lot of time hating on AI and bigots and it's funny how often the two overlap, isn't it?

I was scared of *everything* An early memory is being terrified of the monsters from the 1986 Howard the Duck movie. Actually, I wrote the above before searching for an image, thinking "haha what a silly thing to be scared of", but you know what, seeing it again, I get 10-ish y.o. me.

The only thing I find truly bad about Lanterns is that the Harry Potter references happen so regularly you'd almost think Warner Bros mandated it the same way HBO and Cinemaxx used to mandate sex scenes

Is that a digital paper effect, or did you print and take a perfect picture? (I'm assuming it's not handcolored because of all the Ben Day dots...) (Also, I can't find a consensus on whether it's Ben-space-Day dots or Ben-hyphen-Day dots)

11 panel comic, done in the style of a page that looks like it comes from a time worn old comic.

P1: my cartoon --almost Chibi-- self, walking down a street with earbuds in, looking oblivious

P2: the POV switches to just behind me, as I stare at a car coming towards me in the distance.

P3: A worried look on my face, as I wonder whether I should wave or not, as the car looks familiar

P4: A closeup of my face, as my eyes squeeze tight to see the car better

P5: the car zooming along the road, the driver bathed in shadow

P6: POV pans in on the car and its driver. We see the barest indication of their face against the shadow

P7-thru-P9: we switch to the car interior, over the driver's shoulder, as they drive past me. I stretch out due to motion blur as the car passes me.

P10: a wide side on view as the car zooms off to the right with an audible NNNNYOOOOMMM, leaving me in a cloud of smoke on the left

P11: Back to me, as I now wonder if I shouln't have stared or should have waved

For decades, we made laptops lighter and higher efficiency, and then at some point, at least for anything with any kind of GPU, we went "Fuck it" and everything weighs the same as a toddler and lasts maybe an hour if you only read emails

Tangential, but that link title gave me flashbacks to the several - maybe not *many*, but still *too* many - times someone has sent me an email saying they're sharing a file with me, and the "link" they've pasted is a file path on their computer's hard drive

@catvincent.bsky.social 3 episodes into Kill Jackie, and I'm really loving it! It's simultaneously similar and different enough to the novels that I almost want to see a Jack/Jackie multiverse crossover Also, Christine Adams as The Doc. Hello nurse. Except Doc.

Back in the 10s, I ran all my media through XBMC/KODI, and that was great. But as streaming became more convenient, that kind of fell by the wayside. Now that I'm self-acquiring a lot more again I might have to figure something out, bc transferring everything to an external HDD is getting annoying

I still far prefer owning on disc to... alternatives. And that's easy with movies, but less so with current TV shows.

Like I said, I used to use KODI, but Plex seems to be easier to make work with the TV - does anyone know if that's still good, or has it become enshittified in some way? I've got an LG TV, recommendations for solutions are very welcome, I'm completely out of the loop, media server-wise.

The way ai is marketed is just a new version of the old promise of perpetual motion. It cannot produce any new information about the world that hasn’t already been discovered by humans. A generated video of an ant tells us nothing new about ants that wasn’t already in the original data. I always considered the creative process as a form of discovery. The promise of a perpetual motion machine of creativity rests on very muddy assumptions of how new ideas are generated. Knowledge and creativity is not a library of data, but a continuous, dynamic process that requires interaction with the real world.

Just as with perpetual motion machines, artificial content might look like free energy for a while, but eventually it will grind to a halt unless real humans makes the effort to go out there and wind it up again.

For a time time, despite loving 4K, I didn't download things in 2160p because the file sizes just seemed overwhelming when downloaded in bulk Then I realized that an 8 ep season at ~4.5-5 gigs per episode is pretty much the same as a 22 ep season (remember those?) in 1080p, so, hey!

It's really hard now to explain the excitement of "Did you hear there's a hidden [insert color here] one now??" to someone who wasn't there. It's sort of the video game equivalent of "When I was a kid, I had a stick and a piece of string, and I LIKED it!"

TIL that the opening of Onimusha 3 was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, director of Godzilla: Minus One! Sadly, nearly every upload of it is a stretched, GenAI abomination. So, I ripped and painstakingly upscaled what I consider the greatest video game cinematic ever from its 2007 PC release! Enjoy!

Like, it's perfectly possible that some of the writers just still like Harry Potter - which would suck - but honestly, WB going "You have to stick in some references to remind people that Harry Potter is still a thing" doesn't feel completely impossible, given the PR debacle.

And, subject of course to the comfort of the people performing the sex scenes, I sure as hell prefer those to shit like "Where'd Harry Potter go to school" and "Spazkaban: Space Azkaban"

I should actually revisit it at some point; I don't think I've seen it since I was a kid! Hell, I'm not even sure I've seen the entire movie; more like portions here and there when it ran on TV

More evidence is always good, I guess, but frankly it's ridiculous that, in the year of some people's lord 2026, we're still treating "Rosalind Franklin was robbed" as something that even needs to be confirmed. Sun rises in the East, water makes things wet, Watson & Crick were glory-stealing pricks

I've never watched Friday Night Lights, so from my view, getting tomorrow's newspaper today really took a toll on the guy

Almost caught up on Lanterns, with episode 7 left to watch with the finale tomorrow. I really like the show, but I have no idea how I'd feel about it if I'd been really into Green Lantern in a larger sense. As it is, being uninvested in any particular incarnation, I'm enjoying this.

And frankly, I don't consider "Not getting to make a living off writing and talking about video games" to be retributive justice. He's not going to prison. He's just going to have to find a way to support himself that isn't living his dreams. Most of us are doing that already.

It's just really fucking hard to give a shit about restorative justice for sexual assault in a world where victims are routinely treated far worse than perpetrators of it, to the point where entire systems are functionally designed around it.

I was being kind of careful yesterday, because it was sparked by a blog post of someone who seemed to be grappling with a lot of feelings, but I want to be clear: I don't give a fuck what happens to Jacob Geller. I think he's due zero consideration, and certainly not owed a platform of any kind.
