Lana is right again. beige.party/@Lana/117356...
Lana@beighe.party (Mastodon) said: "I just want to point out that the MAGANazi party tried the culture war bullshit with Zohran Mamdani. They tried, and it failed.

They tried the socialism thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into workers rights.

They tried the trans thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into trans rights.

They tried the immigration thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into immigrant rights.

The lesson here for Centrist Democrats is simple. You don't fight Nazis by giving up ground to the Nazis. You fight Nazis by leaning harder into the wind and standing up for individual rights."

Now that the strategic reserve is in the military minimum range, Trump has ordered emergency offshore drilling in California to feed the US military. Something something pipeline. www.energy.gov/articles/sec... oilprice.com/Energy/Energ...
Truth Social post today by @realDonaldTrump

THE WHITE HOUSE
President Trump Unleashes Oil Production on the West Coast with the Defense Production Act
• Signed an Executive Order enabling the Department of Energy to use the Defense Production Act to restart the Sable Pipeline.
• The Secretary of Energy will issue an order today that results immediate production of 50,000 barrels of oil per day, increasing offshore oil production in California by 550%.
• The pipeline will unleash 20 million barrels of oil equivalent per year to meet urgent Department of War needs to supply 50 military installations on the West Coast.
• The order preempts radical California climate laws, ending California's coordinated regulatory attacks on American energy dominance.

What Pelley said is the interesting part of this story. www.rawstory.com/cbs-scott-pe...
New statement from Scott Pelley:
There has never been anything in America like 60 Minutes.
The Sunday tradition is the most successful program of any kind in history. For more than a decade, its innovative growth on every major online platform has extended its reach to countless millions around the world. This spring, at the end of our 58thseason, 60 Minutes grew rapidly with an unheard-of 9% jump in viewers on CBS.
"60" has been the number-one program in America for decades because our beloved audience finds integrity, quality, and humanity in our stories. When stewardship of the program passed to my colleagues and me, our responsibility was to expand energetically into a new age of media technology while preserving the values our audience expects.
Now, the new owner of our network is casting this legend aside, apparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.
The waste is heartbreaking.
Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause. Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos. For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I've been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done.
Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.
At 60 Minutes, we have fought harder than anyone knows to save the program that became an American icon. We owed that to our millions of viewers. I am deeply moved by the thousands of wishes we have received to "keep up the good fight." Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.
I depart after 37 years at CBS with one emotion—a heart brimming with gratitude for the men and women of CBS News who encouraged and enriched my work, very often at the risk of their own lives. I pray for a day when those people and their ideals are honored again—a day when sanity, competence, and courage return.
Scott Pelley

Even more good news on vaccines. They seem to train your immune system in a way that guards against dementia. Shingles vaccine is most strongly linked to this benefit (which is recommended for everyone 50+ in the US). Women are more at risk from shingles AND dementia. arstechnica.com/health/2026/...
A study published in Nature Communications this month by researchers in California went further. They compared dementia rates among nearly 66,000 people who received the Shingrix vaccine and over 260,000 unvaccinated matched controls. The researchers found that the vaccinated group had a 51 percent lower risk of dementia compared to the unvaccinated controls.

On the web, the ALT text description interaction design is clunky and hard to use. The explanation and buttons are too far apart. The flat, small buttons don't look like buttons even though they have a + added to try to compensate. The edit pen dead-ends at a photo editor UI. #BlueSky #a11y #ux
Screenshot of editor showing how the small black lozenges standing in for buttons disappear visually on black images. These flat ovals appear on the opposite side of the images from the explanation of why you want to add alt text descriptions, ensuring that people are looking in the wrong place for the action. More-familiar edit icons edit the photos instead, making it easy for people to struggle to find the alt-text editor entry point.

Instead, Bluesky could simply display text fields or put an <add description> button above the informational text that opens the editor. Extra points for making that an edit-all so you don't have to pogo-stick in and out of editors for each photo in a post.

A more elegant fix would be to use the edit pencil icon to lead to a combined ALT editor and photo editor, eliminating the HTML jargony and unfamilar (+ ALT) entirely.

March 2: 'Pres Trump told me tonight the US had identified possible candidates to take over Iran, but they were killed in the initial attack.

"The attack was so successful it knocked out most of the candidates," Trump told me. "It's not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead. Second or third place is dead."'

"parents linked arms to block the school entrance"

QP:
Brendan Nyhan •@brendannyhan.bsky.social •

A teacher literally shaking as she describes the threat from her own government to the children she teaches www.theatlantic.com/ politics/202...
Bauer, who is 49, struggled to maintain her composure as she described the day early this month when ICE showed up in force outside her school. Agent had been circling the school since December, seemingly learning its routines, and they arrested some parents just before the winter break. But this time, agents leapt out in riot gear and began entering the apartments just across from the school, where many students live.
"We had to lock down and keep the kids inside, and parents linked arms to block the school entrance," Bauer said. "We had a student who was looking out the window and saw them break into his apartment and just sobbed,
'That's my house. That's my home.' And we shut the blinds, but it was too late."
Bauer has been a teacher for 25 years, a period that has included a rise of school shootings and the drills that have become common to protect against them. "But I never thought it would be our own government we had to protect the kids from," she told me. "We kept them physically safe, but they saw what happened."
As she spoke, Bauer's hands were trembling. She held them up and smiled weakly. "I don't think I've stopped shaking for two weeks," she said.

This chart was posted last night by @bruces.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy. I would add that the Zombie phase can confer brand loyalty and provide a community of enthusiasts for the next wave of new-product experiments. Ideally open-sourcing can continue maintenance that users need.
A line graph with 3 lines on it: Gartner Group Hype Cycle curve, Cumulative Consumer Adoption S-Curve and artistic use. The X-axis is not labeled, but it represents the relative number of users. Y-axis is time.

The timeline is broken into 3 phases, first NEW MEDIAL PHASE (artists using technologies, companies discussing potentials), CONSUMER COMMODITY PHASE (engineering maturation of hardware and business model or content, artists less interested unless work dealing with the "everyday"), and the ZOMBIE PHASE (mainstream obsolescence, mature technologies available at no cost, reuse by counterculture)
