It's even worse than that. Young people used to join the service to learn basic trades, like food prep and construction. Now the DoD uses private contractors to cook meals, build housing and a lot more. So a lot of enlisted are stuck doing military jobs, like infantry and loading bombs into planes.

Which is why I was shocked to find out that some military families are on SNAP and various forms of (civilian) public assistance. That is not supposed to happen. And yeah, it's been "Rich Man's Fight, Poor Man's War" since the Civil War, when a wealthy man could buy a substitute for $300.

Eh, maybe. Those guys would fill in the ground combat sectors of the military. But I wager most are poor young people from places with zero job openings and just want to make a living. These are the ones who take non-combat enlisted slots in the Navy and Air Force.
