God this John Healey speech is depressing. "Pints eh, aren't they great?" And "menial work, isn't it good for your soul, eh?" And "it doesn't pay enough to own anything, but it's Honest, isn't it, Honest Good Smokestack work, eh?". Feck off back to the 70s wid yer

A break from my own attempts at working out how to poem for a book recommendation - Alice Oswald's Rhapsody: A Manifesto. It's dreamlike, it's rewiring, it's alive. Few books have made me feel so simultaneously thick and uneducated *and* excited and interested in everything. It's a wonder of a book
A copy of Alice Oswald's new book Rhapsody: a Manifesto
A page of the book, focused on the quote:
'There are few things more horrible than these permanent traces of permanent rage'A page from the book, focused on the quote:
'If you know how to wake up, then you know how to read poetry.'

A Poem featuring a Jackdaw
I asked the jackdaw about it
about all the things

her enamelled blue eye said
why do you care
don't care about such things
do always what needs to be done

I was glad that regarding me
was a thing needing to be done

One about swimming and other things. At this point, I'm starting to wonder whether my plan to write a poem nearly every day is actually going to make me better at poetry or drive me slightly insane and make me lose all value judgement. In other news I have discovered Thomas A Clarke and am in love
Poseidon he loves me

Wraps his arms around my waist
and pulls
me
down
towards the sobriety
of things being singular

His hand is huge
the span covering my stomach
from shining hip
to shining hip

And the restraining chains
of the marker buoys
are as loud
here
as there

That Poseidon.
He loves me

Another, having just got off the train from Llandudno Junction. I still feel I'm trying too hard at this, using a Poetry Voice rather than my voice. It's the smug last lines that give 'em away
He barks again
shaking his paper wide
so I can see it across the aisle
severing the line
pulling the pylons past the window
scrubbing out the wave-form hills
that were being drawn as we moved

Look at this here he says
Young boy here he says
Dropped dead he says
Heart Attack he says
Listen he says
Ninth This Year To Die he says
Heart Attack he says

At school of all places he says

and I think

where else

I'm trying to do these at least daily, writing quickly with minimum revision. Hoping to hit some sort of stride faster. One of the things I'm realising is how much of a craft it is, writing a poem. All my art education (GCSE through to PhD) has left me underprepared for actually making things
The one with his shirt off
Skin the colour of an infected eye

Thinks he'll be at the top
Afterwards
Look at his *traps*. Look at his *lats*

Thinks he's primitive
He's the fittest so he'll survive
Common sense

As modern as a spreadsheet
As reliant as a newborn
Think of the calories alone

Doesn't see he'd never sleep again
Never walk in front of someone
Without fear

Imagine! Constantly waiting
For the clawhammer
To the back of the head

In an Uninteresting Turn of Events, I've been trying to test out poetry. My art practice has been getting on my tits lately, and the simplicity of poetry just seems so much more appealing right now. This one is a found poem, inspired by an Amazon review of a slutty little pair of red shorts I bought
Got shronked

*Shrunked*

If I've learnt one thing from the BBC Winter Olympics commentary, it's that I just need to relax and let the equipment do the work. Oh, and more amplitude

The police statement that 'a man in his 60s from Norfolk' has been arrested is tickling me no end
