In Wholeness We light our chalice not to defeat the darkness, but because, for a time, we need the gifts of flame: warmth and light to guide and help us in our endeavors. And when the time comes, we will embrace again the gentle dark which allows us rest. —Rev. Sean Parker Dennison
In Wholeness

There is no competition between this light
and the darkness which holds it.
Both the light and the darkness are holy.

We light our chalice not to defeat the darkness,
but because, for a time, we need the gifts of flame:
warmth and light to guide and help us in our endeavors.
And when the time comes, we will embrace
again the gentle dark which allows us rest.

And so, we kindle this light with awareness and gratitude
for light and dark and all that lies in-between.
Each with its gifts, each with its beauty,
each part of a sacred and necessary whole.

Run, Run All this running, and all for this: She wants to love like thunder, love like the smell of honeysuckle, love with all the reckless abandon of summer afternoon rain. —Jess Reynolds Love Like Thunder Available wherever books are sold and from inSpirit: The UU Book and Gift Shop.
Run, Run

This body is a wild one:
love ripping through these veins
like fire across a prairie,
eager and hungry and holy.

Wilder still are the humming bees
that make this garden their home,
the sharp sunset color
in the dying autumn leaves,
the river running so fast
it trips over its own feet
and tumbles down a mountainside.

This heart is chasing that river,
chasing the fish swimming downstream
and the leaves about to touch soil
and the tide pulling away from the shore.
This heart is sprinting down dirt paths,
breathing so hard she might crack open.

All this running, and all for this:
She wants to love like thunder,
love like the smell of honeysuckle,
love with all the reckless abandon
of summer afternoon rain.

"The school-supply section of any store draws me like a moth to a flame. I no longer need spiral-bound notebooks or #2 pencils . . . But I have a theory. For so many years, in those aisles, I could believe that the present was full of possibility." —Vanessa Rush Southern, Miles of Dream
School Supplies

The school-supply section of any store draws me like a moth to a flame. I no longer need spiral-bound notebooks or number-two pencils, a new lunch pail or spiffy. I’m not sure why I’m drawn to these things since my most recent academic endeavor is years in the past already. But I have a theory.

For so many years, standing in those aisles, I could believe that my past did not determine my present. And the present was full of possibility. Entire worlds of knowledge and adolescent adventure, growth, and change were possible in the year I was preparing for. . . . At the beginning of the school year everything seemed possible.

Now that I am older there is the danger of losing that sense of possibility, of thinking myself an old dog whose tricks might be modified around the edges but never really significantly changed. . . . It is never advisable to hang up the knapsack of adventurous, expectant living for long.

Maybe this is why I like school supplies. Here is this world that says, in colors and crisp white paper, that all is new and all things are possible again.

Postscript: A woman was seen at Staples last week. Her eyes settled on a marbled blue fountain pen. When asked why she bought it, the woman told the clerk she needed a river of ink to ride into the new year. He said he didn’t quite understand what she meant, but he’d seen this behavior in this season, in these aisles, before.

Letting Go I went to the beach, and it was soft today, temperate hues merging and separating; clouds and ocean reflecting, complementing each other, and far away an occasional beam from the Gurnet Light. —Elizabeth Tarbox, taken from Life Tides
Letting Go

I went to the beach, and it was soft today, temperate hues merging and separating; clouds and ocean reflecting, complementing each other, and far away an occasional beam from the Gurnet Light.

Oh let me touch the faces of those I love with the same gentle-ness the waves show to the shore; let me sing my song with the same feeling with which the gulls fill the sacred space of sea and sky. Let me learn of beauty from the affection of morning sunlight; let my sorrow learn to meld with the tinted clouds; let my joy learn to swim and fly and fill the dawn with my delight.

And when my body is tired and no longer wants to be a part of
the active life, then let it be from here
that my soul flies free.

All That You Need Lies Within You Once it is in your heart let it spread into your life, let it pour from your life into the world— and once it is in the world, let it shine upon all beings. —Angela Herrera Reaching for the Sun
All That You Need Lies Within You

Consider this an invitation
to you.
Yes—you
with all your happiness
and your burdens,
your hopes and regrets.
An invitation if you feel good today,
and an invitation if you do not,
if you are aching—
and there are so many ways to ache. . . .

Maybe your heart is heavy
or hardened.
Maybe it’s troubled
and peace can take up residence
only in a small corner,
only on the edge,
with all that is going on in the world,
and in your life.
Ni modo. It doesn’t matter.

All that you need
for a deep and comforting peace to grow
lies within you.
Once it is in your heart
let it spread into your life,
let it pour from your life into the world—
and once it is in the world,
let it shine upon all beings.

The Healing Moment "And what I don’t know ceases to embarrass me, because what I do know is that the water feels gentle like a lover’s touch, and the sand welcomes it." —Elizabeth Tarbox, Life Tides
The Healing Moment

Each day I am newly reminded of my unworthiness: a dozen thoughts misspoken; another day when the good I do falls so far short of the good that I could do; myriad small interchanges, moments of sharing that strain to the breaking point my desire to be generous, helpful, and kind; months of careful work lost by a moment’s impatience, a careless word.

But when I am here at the edge of creation, breaking with the small tide over the sand, the need to do good rolls away; the question of what is right diminishes to insignificance and is easily borne away by the tiny waves. Here, where no words are spoken, none are misspoken.

I am with the broken stubble of the marsh grass that holds on through the wrecking wind and the burning flood. I am with the grains that mold themselves around everything, accepting even so unworthy a foot as mine, holding and shaping it until it feels that it belongs. I stand somewhere between truth and vision, and what I don’t know ceases to embarrass me, because what I do know is that the water feels gentle like a lover’s touch, and the sand welcomes it.

What I have done or failed to do has left no noticeable mark on creation. What I do or don’t do is of no moment now. Now I am here and grateful to be touched, calmed, and healed by the immense pattern of the universe. And when I die, it will be an honor for my blood to return to the sea and my bones to become the sand.

Reassured, I am called back to my life, to another day.

—Elizabeth Tarbox, Life Tides

Today And yet the taste of this perfectly ripe pear on my tongue reminds me of heaven and of gifts beyond measure: like sweetness and sunset and again, tomorrow. —Rev. Sean Parker Dennison Breaking and Blessing: Meditations
Today
has been
a day, like all
days, it seems,
in which I let people
down and did not
love as fully as I
always hope.
And today I have
been sad because
always there are the
unexpected
and unpredictable
consequences of
what I do and
do not know.
And yet the taste

Self-ish To bring value back to your Self in a world that functions by daily stripping you of it, you must hold fast to being first in your mind and heart. —Marta I. Valentín A Long Time Blooming
Self-ish

Unless you were of a certain shade
and persuasion
you were not taught by the world
outside of your family
that what you thought mattered,
that how you showed up in the world
could alter the real in reality,
that who you loved
would bring to light forms of affections
always present, yet kept in darkness.

To bring value back to your
Self
in a world that functions by daily
stripping you of it,
you must hold fast to being
first
in your mind and heart.
To be number one
to number one,
means being self-ish, that is, knowing
that who and what you have been
in spite of the intrusion and institution
of internalized oppression
makes all the difference
in creating a multicultural world
and must shine forth.

—Marta I. Valentín

The light must spill to shine. The thing you must be is yourself. Unadulterated, shedding the willingness to journey alone, as though you are made of something hard and unforgivable. You are human. You belong, right here, right now. —Spilling the Light Rev. Julián Jamaica Soto Spilling the Light
Some people are used to keeping rules; don’t cross
the street when the light is red, only sensible. It turns
out that keeping rules isn’t the same as keeping covenant,
which asks us, instead of keeping a bright line, to keep our
promises.

To what have we promised ourselves? To this
moment in time and place. To this community and even,
tenderly interconnected, this planet.
We promise ourselves to the idea that we
are each and all human beings. We promise that there
is something moving between us that we cannot tame
and cannot measure. The chalice is a reminder
that what flame we keep inside us cannot light the way.

The light must spill to shine.

The thing you must be is yourself.
Unadulterated, shedding the willingness
to journey alone, as though you are made of something
hard and unforgivable. You are human. You belong,
right here, right now. And together, we will chase away
the sickness, the secrets, and leave only the open
Possibility that the future is a space for growth.

Untether yourself from the engines of busyness, one by one— laptop, desktop, wristwatch, scribbled lists, even the telephone, especially the one you carry everywhere, the little tyrant. —Kathleen McTigue An excerpt from "Summer Sabbath" Taken from Shine and Shadow
Untether yourself from the engines of busyness,
one by one—
laptop, desktop, wristwatch, scribbled lists,
even the telephone,
especially the one you carry everywhere,
the little tyrant.
This will all feel unnatural
but it’s not. . . .

Instead, consider your life—
who you love, and why,
how lucky you are to be here, resting
under a shower of birdsong,
or what strange bright luck it is to be the owner,
for a few years, of this beating heart,
these wondering eyes, the ears
into which the kingfisher spills her small chuckle as
she dips across the water. . . .
