Beware falling bikes - sign Greenford Road
Day light, bluish sky. Small round blue and white sign showing a bicycle on top above a person holding hands with a small child. The sign is on top of a poll on a pavement beside a hedge on the left and leafy trees casting shadow patterns.

Sunday #photo
It's a sunny suburban street with a pleasing view of trees and no pavement on the left of a tarmac road, a pavement on the right side at the point of view with dappled shadows of through trees that must be behind the viewpoint and a row of 1930s semi-detached houses on the right. There is no traffic to be seen, although there is one car parked in the distance. The sort of V of sky has some flat silvery white clouds under the blue.

"Bridge of Tolka, Drumcondra Park, spelter baluster, pewter spate" #photo
Day. Bridge. A photo from a bridge through the "balusters" (balustrade?) to the water gleaming below which seems like it could be in spate. It's a tight view, with little or no surrounding context.

Last of the handwritten #poems from an old unfinished sketch book. "Unquiet Flows the Tolka". I wrote this in 2008 about an exchange student from the US of c.40 years earlier. In 2008 McCain and Obama ran for president. Stac was Austin Coll a local singer songwriter. Swan was local poet Bob Farrell.
Two square pages in a sketchbook.
Left: Scribbly impressions of a bus and signage including of a shop window with written on the wall above it "What Hitler could not do" and on another wall "Save our fish - no E.E.C." Probably what looks like a river above with vague possible woman swimming backstroke or floating.
Right: handwritten text
UNQUIET FLOWS THE TOLKA

Bridge of Tolka, Drumcondra Park,
spelter baluster, pewter spate.
Spectre of Swan’s liturgy, philtre of Stac’s refrain,
and peroxide Ida, acid exchange student,
your college green a prairie to our Botanics.
You sexed me with a buttercup, highly,
and yogi-sat akimbo. Oh Ida, we shoulda.
I’da.Left square page: Bridge over river with what's supposed to be a weir below and what's supposed to be a very small tree growing in the middle but looks unconvincing. On the left bank and left of the bridge: a big scribbly tree, part of a building. One the right bank, part of nondescript building.
Right square page: handwritten text:
Where are you now,
Obama bounden, marked for McCain,
bankrupt in Ohio, divorced in Union City?
Do men put their words into your mouth in Idaho?
Are you a mother of succour or did you die
purple-hearted by the tracks in Maine?

I’ll seek you high and low in Isle au Haut,
I’ll trade Manhattan for rosary beads
and pray for an apparition, I’ll drop into every dive
from Atlantic City to shining Zee,
and go over Niagara in a glass-bottomed boat,
looking for my Tolka naiad.Left square page: A small wonky drawing of a guitar

Right square page: handwritten text:

But should all peroxide Idas look the same,
I’ll find out what Martinis are and drink them dry,
I’ll down firewater without reservation in the Indian nations,
I’ll find a night door and wait for you there
as longing, unquiet as the Tolka flows.

"What Is the Meaning of Meaning?" #poetry
(Text) What is the Meaning of Meaning?

/“He’s got no faloorum, fol-diddle-dol-day
Maids when you’re young, never wed an old man”/

Meaning is like faloorum.
Life has no meaning, old men no faloorum.
Fol-diddle-dol-doorum.
He’s lacking in meaning fol-diddle-dol-day.
He’s got no faloorum, he’s meaningless too-rum,
Maids when you’re young never ask an old man.

If there’s no meaning no meaning has meaning.

So all is fine because life has no meaning
and nothing has meaning, not meaning itself.
It’s no loss for life to be lacking in something
that has no meaning when lack of a meaning
is the lack of a nothing, by definition,
and the lack of a nothing is no lack at all.

If you let sweet potato grow you get pretty leaves on sort of vines (? runners?). They go off in all directions. You don't need to keep the whole sweet potato either, they can take on a life of their own. Later I discarded the potato from the pot in this photo. Vines grew again from the "empty" pot!
Cluttered sideboard with bric-a-brac, vases, cups, glasses etc etc with the focus on a pot plant on top with vines roaming, mostly hanging down, with pretty heart shaped green leaves at longish intervals.

Mackerel sky over Greenford Road, Monday #Photo
Evening. Mackerel sky, fleecy rippling white clouds in blue occupy two thirds of the photo above scene of entry to service road beside Greenford Road (almost out of shot on the right). Things noticeable, old gatehouse beside entrance to park, large David Lloyd sports centre sign above entrance, "hand car wash this way" sign, tall lampposts, a litter bin, and further along on the pavement a "Welcome to Harrow" sign, people in the distance etc.

Cavendish Avenue, Harrow, Sunday
Day, bluish sky with gauzy white. A large black fence in the left, trees lining right and left, a street with a faded painted roadmarking "20" dips down a bit in the middle distance then rises away again out of signt. Far along cars are parked. A small delivery motorbike is heading away in the middle of the road, on the right there are also trees but the nice thing is the way several lines from a telephone pole catch the light.

...in which I waffle on about "Pain and the Stars" and add a second litany for the distaff side. I was visited by the ghost of Bette Davis with a cricket bat. That was enough. I will screenshot the texts in question here.
PAIN AND THE STARS

Robert Mitchum’s expression says, I have a little pain but it’s nothing I can’t handle.

Burt Lancaster says, I can bear it, I can bear it, how about you?

Mastroianni seems to say, I fear I might be next but I’ll be ready for the day.

Paul Newman of course has heard about it, would like to talk about it, if you wish.

Steve McQueen is dead, died of pain, always looked like he would.

Which brings us to Jimmy Dean and all those other martyrs, well they got what they wanted.

But Eastwood, now he offers pain, you want it, (well do you punk?), there’s plenty to go round.

Bogart is not really thinking about his own pain, his terrible pain, he only wants to ask about yours.

Edward G: I’ve got it, now you’re going to get it.

Cagney thinks it’s all the same, joy or pain, best get it while it’s going.

Brando: What have you got, I’m hedging my bets but I’m thinking how can I get out of this before it hurts.

James Mason: Don’t talk to me about pain, my back is killing me.

George Sanders is thinking, pain you say – we’ll see about that.

There were women too, shrieking and tittering, they knew it served us right.

But that was all a long time ago.

(Day of the Flying Leaves)PAIN AND THE STARS (ii)

Grace Kelly: My pain is something you’ll never know about.

Marlene Dietrich says I am the merciful pain that never strikes but laughs.

Joan Crawford: I’ll give her pain! How sharper than a serpent’s tooth is an ungrateful daughter.

Katherine Hepburn says Pain? I can talk about pain till you’re blue in the face.

Marilyn Monroe: I take pills for that and pile on satire so obscure that nobody gets it and if they did, they would die.

Bette Davis says I don’t believe in pain, it’s a myth. What you mean is the inability of weaklings to focus and control control themselves.

Doris Day: I knew Jimmy Stewart before he was a heterosexual.

Greta Garbo wants to be alone. No people, no pain.

Keeley Hawes: I’m not Louisa, I’m the Home Secretary. I haven’t got time for this. Leave me out of it, I am very much alive.

Ignore the men, always harrumphing and flying into rages.

But that was not a long time ago.

How did it get there?
Day. Blue sky, white clouds. A very large yellow JCB-type digger on caterpillar tracks is seen on top of a mound of earth, perhaps twice or 1.5 times its own height, pyramidical and the top with hardly enough room for the digger to stand on. The arm of the digger is outstretched bent down to near the ground. There is no one in the cab. A wire panel fence in the foreground, some blocks of flats in the background. All in the car park or anyway, flat space in front of a block of flats. There's nobody around.

Friends of the poet. Pet weed, peonies, forget-me-nots and lilies, orchids. #photo #wildflowers #houseplants #orchids
Daylight. Red brick wall behind beautiful tall yellow-flowered wildflowers ("false dandelion"?) growing seemingly, must be, from crack paving slabs. Also in the bottom left corner a smaller white flowered plant, probably alyssum, also growing from paving. Daylight. Fingers of a hand reach down to show scale of large red peony flowers amid rough grass, paving stone and various leaves. The peonies are like large red silk pom-poms.Day. View from above of picturesque random profuse array of tiny blue forget-me-notes beside tall white lilies with their yellow stamens (?) sticking up and one not yet unfurled and background below of grass, weeds and thin fronds etc. Nothing else in view, no context.Daylight, indoor plant pots with close-up of four magenta "spattered" on white coloured orchids with their complex petal arrangements. Sort of "in your face" feeling. The fronds of the orchids in the background, also a scented candle that looks like a big white flower and indefinite jumble out-of-focus in the background.

Man working in deep trench. Look near the very middle of the photo, you can see the back of a hi-vis vest; that is the man there. The gas pipes are very deep round here.
Longish very deep trench excavated in suburban pavement between grass verge and someone's front garden. The trench is reinforced by vertical metal stanchions and transverse timber plank. There is rubble and heaps of soil and various building stuff. A white hard hat lies on top of some concrete slabs (?). You can hardly see it and also hardly believe it but there is a man in the very middle of the photo, who is at the far end of the trench and very far below ground level, and all you can see is the back of his hi-vis jacket, which looks so small in this perspective.

Refugees, an excerpt from The End, begins a sequence of stories leading to The Beginning. The regression is triggered by a musical toy that plays All Those Endearing Young Charms, leading back to when Joe's dad taught him to play the tune. stephenmoransmuseumofillusions.wordpress.com/2025/12/23/t...
Image of page 71 from a book showing the start of a story titled in oversized Garamond Italic "The End", then a section title "Hostel". The opening of the story can then be seen, cut off at the bottom of the page in mid-sentence, as follows:

The End

Hostel

Tunnel! Forget your shame, your degradation. Let the sound of the train be a machine gun cutting you down. Light again! Shut your eyes.

He had landed at Dover, carried along in a slow-moving crowd. A uniformed man stamped his Irish passport. The money went quickly in Paris, even living on croque monsieur and draft beer. He had a room under the roof of a pension near the Place d’Italie. At night the spring fragrance of the city filled the room through the open window, bearing traces of Turkish tobacco and lady of the night.

[italics]
Tunnel! Remember the presents you bought her. She rejected them. Rattle that gun! Let it cut you down. Light! The sound of a sabre as it beheads you is the word, ‘Forget.’

Someone said at one time hundreds of telephone operators used to work there, now completely automated, no one in except periodic visits by engineer for maintenance.
