8/ As private actors increasingly shape governance across borders, understanding how international firms influence domestic institutions in foreign markets has become more important than ever. I look forward to discussing the book over the coming year.

7/ It combines original quantitative evidence across firms and countries, together with extensive interviews with business leaders, lawyers, and government officials in China, Vietnam, the US, and beyond.

6/ The book develops this argument through the politics of intellectual property protection, an area where the institutional demands of foreign investors have often been particularly visible—and politically contested.

5/ Further, MNC influence unfolds in two stages: first, firms enlist home governments to secure stronger legal commitments from host states; second, firms work within domestic institutions to turn those commitments into effective implementation.

4/ Firms also do not exercise this influence alone. Their ability to shape institutions depends on the alignment of interests among foreign firms, their home governments, and host governments. Institutional change therefore emerges from bargaining among firms and states.

3/ I argue that foreign investors can become important agents of institutional change in emerging markets. When weak or uneven institutions threaten valuable investments, firms may invest political, legal, and organizational resources in strengthening the rule of law.

2/ The book begins with a puzzle: multinational firms are often portrayed as seeking out countries with strong institutions—or exploiting countries where institutions are weak. But what happens when firms themselves have incentives to change the institutions they encounter?

I’m delighted to share that my book, Closing the Institutional Gap: How Foreign Investors Shape Domestic Institutions in Emerging Markets, is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press later this fall. A short thread on the argument and what I hope the book contributes. 🧵

As the US steps back from leading in global governance institutions, China has increasingly stepped into leadership roles, serving as head of WHO, FAO, and other important UN agencies in recent years. In new (open access!) work with @rhulvey.bsky.social in @the-peio.bsky.social we ask: why? 1/5

Supporting Women in International Political Economy Conference
April 12, 2024
The one-day conference has three primary aims: 1) present innovative work on international
political economy, 2) create opportunities for networking and feedback within and across levels
of seniority, 3) provide space to articulate challenges (and strategies for addressing these
challenges) particular to women (and non-binary) scholars working in IPE. By connecting
women at different stages of their careers, the conference will help foster new connections
and conversations about career advancement and opportunities in the field of IPE.
The conference will feature panels of junior scholars with senior discussants, a roundtable
on academic careers in IPE, and happy hour and dinner for informal conversations.
Submissions: We are soliciting submissions on topics in international political economy
from junior (defined as post-PhD, pre-tenure) women and non-binary scholars.

LinkedIn does not seem to have a LinkedIn Premium giftcard option. Wondering if there are suggestions as to what types of incentives and rewards could be implemented for LinkedIn surveys?
