Yes we have data on segregation of informal interactions at 18 conferences, but right now our data doesn’t cover APSA data (we do cover major econ and soc conferences). Actually, if anyone at APSA this week is interested in contributing to our data, please email me now and it’s not too late!!

In anticipation of Pi Day, I used Claude Code to create fun math visualizations for my kid (and myself!). Here’s Buffon’s Needle for estimating \pi. Enjoy!

With the Fall 2026 NYC Kindergarten Application now open, I'm reposting a web app we developed a year ago to simulate a child’s admission probability at a target school based on the DOE hexadecimal random number, # of applicants, and the # of non-sibling seats: siwei-cheng.github.io/NYC_kinderga...

My 5-yo kid crosses out every hypothesis that he believes to be wrong in his book. I only wish I had that kind of boldness in my own work.

Agreed. I think ESL presents a good transition from classic statistical methods to more recent computational methods.

Yes, thanks for noting that! That’s such a fantastic paper and in my view should be added to every reading list on strat, occupations, culture, text analysis, and computational methods.

If by "computational" you mean quant methods that leverage computational advances, I recommend a hidden gem - "Computer Age Statistical Inference" by Efron & Hastie. I'm also teaching basic chapters from "The Elements of Statistical Learning" (Hastie et al) in my grad-level advanced methods class.
