Between Medicaid cuts and physician burnout we are heading towards a collapse of primary care in the U.S., along with a mass exodus from public health and science. And I don't blame doctors. They didn't get into medicine to spend their hours refuting crackpot Facebook theories.
Doctors are doing everything they can, yet many of us feel increasingly exhausted, disillusioned, and isolated. I hear this constantly from colleagues across infectious diseases, primary care, pediatrics, and public health. We are all carrying the same weight and spending our days trying to counter fear and fiction while public trust erodes. The emotional toll is profound — moral injury from trying to protect patients but being unable to break through the disinformation shaping their choices, burnout from debating the facts repeatedly, and sadness from watching preventable illnesses occur.
