I am not an expert in AI and Cognitive Science, but I do know a fair amount about linguistics and writing instruction, and some basic comp sci. I find it next to impossible to make uni colleagues believe what I have to say about gen AI.

According to Guest, the recruitment text makes it clear that In'to's staff are not Al experts. 'What they are experts in, for example, is delivering language courses. After all, Radboud University has a Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence.'

It is precisely this disregard for expertise that Van Rooij identifies as a pitfall of Al. 'One of the consequences of the Al hype is that everyone suddenly seems to be an expert, whilst genuine subject-matter experts are ignored. When I look at the text announcing this workshop, I get the imnession that the uncritical approach to Al technologies
has worsened in recent years.'

Been playing this lately, and this is peak character design
LORELEI AND THE LASER EYES

The protagonist stands in front of the game’s hotel, wearing a disgustingly stylish 1960s Italian-style ensemble of cropped dark pants, a ruffled blouse and double-buttoned short jacket.

Pull these layers together and a coherent picture emerges. Decades of economic failure - deindustrialisation, austerity, the looting of state resources, the systematic underfunding of public services - has created genuine desperation. Into that desperation, a sustained ideological campaign by mainstream economic actors has injected the idea that the only path to recovery is for us all to tighten our belts and shoulder more pain; that the state cannot resource what we want; that what exists must be rationed. And into this world of scarcity, political entrepreneurs have inserted the figure of the migrant as the illegitimate queue-jumper.
Each layer enables the next. The material conditions create the desperation. The scarcity narrative makes it seem permanent and zero-sum. The xenophobic mobilisation provides a target that doesn't threaten economic power.

This is a monstrous mindset. These things just aren't real to him.
Musk did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this article. Last month, in an interview with Bloomberg, he argued that his critics have been unable to produce any evidence that these cuts at USAID have resulted in any real suffering. “It’s false,” he said. “I say, ‘Well, please connect us with this group of children so we can talk to them and understand more about their issue,’ we get nothing. They don’t even try to come up with a show orphan.”

I really liked the Elden Ring manga, though. It leans into being a journal of playing the game, and as a result it is silly as heck.
A scene of the Elden Ring manga in which the Tarniahed encounters Blaidd chasing and catching a Scarab (he's just a dog chasing a ball)

HEY...
WHAT'RE YOU CHASING?

WAIT UP!

THIS GUY'S
NO WOLF.
HE'S JUST A BIG DOG...

AHH, SORRY, FRIEND.
WHEN I SEE SOMETHING
ROUND, I JUST CAN'T HELP BUT CHASE IT...

Look, outages and software are complicated, so I'm not going to speculate. But why is this *postmortem* like this? This is some kind of facile LinkedIn-style insight from babies reinventing the wheel
you should add extensive observability before you have an outage. We do have a lot, but it's never enough! We need to add per-client o11y as well as get better metrics on when clients send small numbers of large requests.

It was all buried in there, but it was hard to know where to look when so much was falling over all at once. You need to have the mental discipline and high granularity in your metrics to be able to cut through the noise to find the real root cause. It's hard work!

Also, logging too much isn't great.

Such an interesting observation by Aleksander Rostov in the latest Disco Elysium Noclip documentary about the appeal of the game.
Screenshot of the Noclip documentary with subtitled audio from Rostov:

"that it seemed to be that the core audience of this game, who would appreciate it the most,"Screenshot of the Noclip documentary with subtitled audio from Rostov:

"were of course middle aged men and teenage girls."Screenshot of the Noclip documentary with subtitled audio from Rostov:

"The middle-aged men, I guess, found something to identify with,"Screenshot of the Noclip documentary with subtitled audio from Rostov:

"and teenage girls found a work of art that wasn't condescending towards them."
