“I had originally written it about three Black brothers, all of whom are bad guys: a corrupt cop, a drug dealer, and a sexual criminal,” Schrader explained. “And they were all trying to kill each other. And Antoine Fuqua was going to produce it.”

According to Schrader, he and Fuqua then approached actors with the project and ran into a fundamental problem.

“We sent it out to actors, and no Black actors wanted to play in a movie where there are no good Black people,” he said. “And it sort of died. But then AI came along, and I didn’t need Black actors.”

This film was as much about America as about it's Black Muslims. There was only a need for Malcolm because of what America was and is. What it does and did. Any film that peeks through the patriotic haze and speaks honestly about Europe's "Frankenstein's monster" is a definitive movie about America.

Pearson got into Tuberville’s doghouse following a penalty against the Hurricanes in the Iowa game. As Pearson recalls the incident, Tuberville mistakenly blamed him for the penalty.
Tuberville pulled Pearson from the game and the two became involved in a heated and animated argument on the sidelines.
“He told me, ‘As long as I’m a coach here, you’ll never play,'” Pearson said."
