I'm thinking slightly posher cuisine. You put different cuts of meat or veg in and then when you slice it you can see all the layers. I feel like it's eaten with piccalilli or cornichons. That kind of thing. It must be French. I want to make one with fennel. I picked some, earlier. Rosie approved.

Just whipped upsome no-churn ice cream from my leftover Christmas pudding (it was large & my Christmas was miserably mostly solitary). I was licking the spoon (bc double cream, condensed milk and brandy) when suddenly I felt so strongly like John was behind me peering over my shoulder. I miss him.

I just fished out the sherry glasses (they're actually Russian vodka glasses) and found (, almost missed), in the bottom, with the dust, two tiny (I'm talling smaller than a peppercorn) pieces of paper. One saying "I lov you" and the other saying "Bchk" (the noise an angry goose makes).

I'm delighted to let you all know that it is, verily, congee season. There is a small dog in this house who can readily attest to the healing powers of chicken and rice (although my version has non-pupsafe comestibles in it. 'Tis, after all, also the season of ginger, garlic, and chilli peppers).

I thought, since I stumbled upon it, and since I am thinking of the dear boy a lot today, that I might share John's recipe for flapjack - something that he was borderline obsessed with. You couldn't encounter him without him foisting some upon you, but since it's tasty, it wasn't exactly a hardship.
