Sorry to hear and obviously don't know details, but return without review is awful after so much effort. I hope the grad student can retool the proposal. There are fewer awards anticipated this year. Nothing is certain, but a good proposal serves many purposes and it may still be worth a shot.

Yes and women don’t need men or nuclear families to make babies. Maternal mortality is always tragic. Probably more so when cultures insist on nuclear families being the only way to raise kids.

Since this piece about contemporary manifestations of eugenics, including “fertility crisis“ narratives, mentions evolutionary psychology, it’s worth noting that evolutionary psychologists are now actively promoting those “fertility crisis” claims in their journals

It's important to create space to debate the technicalities of these arguments. The Vanderbilt Report is an attempt to silence them through *argument by assertion and authority*. Fallacious propaganda from institutions who insist that their view of the world is, and always was, correct.

And btw, it is virtually certain that the ethnographic record underreported hunting by women. You can quibble with analytical decisions made in Anderson paper, but to object to the premise that women have hunted more often than we were aware of is ludicrous.

Is this really the best report to offer our chancellors and administrators when academic freedom is at risk? It may seem safe to use the humanities as some sort of sacrificial diversionary tactic, but make no mistake - they are coming for the sciences, too.

The report is full of platitudes, followed by conservative perspectives unsubstantiated by evidence and fueled by cherry-picked and decontextualized quotations.

BUT, I listen carefully to relativists and other humanistic colleagues because their critiques motivate more careful work. That dialogue is precisely what makes anthropology such an exciting field. Writing off the humanities as "politicized" reinforces silos and arrests development.

I am personally more inclined toward finding similarities among humans than focused on their differences so do not subscribe to relativism in the strict sense offered by the (non-AI?) authors of this report.

This is an excellent, forensic investigation into Stephen Pinker's ties with Epstein. "Academic scientists of the Epstein class covered for Epstein's crimes, laundered his reputation, and legitimized his pseudo-intellectual pursuit of eugenics, racism, and sexism"
Pinker effectively helped Dershowitz to obtain a “completely unprecedented” plea bargain with U.S. attorney Alex Acosta in 2008 which granted Epstein and alleged co-conspirators immunity to federal prosecution for trafficking dozens of underage girls. In exchange for pleading guilty to lesser “prostitution” charges, the plea bargain allowed Epstein to serve just 13 months in Palm Beach County Jail, with work release seven days per week. Epstein allegedly continued with his sex crimes at the offices of his Florida Science Foundation during his work release. Without the deal, Epstein could have served a life sentence and might not have been free to continue abusing hundreds of victims for another decade, up until his final arrest in 2019 on separate federal charges for trafficking minors. Regardless of whether he knew whose defense he was writing the letter for, Pinker’s expert opinion helped Dershowitz to create a potential loophole for pedophiles to escape federal charges.

The American Anthropological Association has put out a very clear statement in response to a new report claiming the humanities and social sciences are ruining themselves with left-wing bias. Would be good to see more such robust responses to these familiar yet deeply unhelpful accusations
The report also characterizes anthropology’s attention to positionality and reflexivity as evidence of a broader rejection of objectivity. This is wholly incorrect. Reflexivity is not, as the report asserts a claim that facts don’t exist, that they are irrelevant, or that all interpretations are equally valid. It is a methodological commitment to examining how knowledge is produced and to making visible the assumptions, relationships, and contexts that shape research. Far from weakening scholarly rigor, many anthropologists see reflexivity as one of the ways rigor is strengthened.
