I’m so glad my parents had this book at home—and let me read it even when very young. I’m so glad Raymond Briggs wrote a comic, so simply conveying the folly and horrors of war As we learned about war at primary school, this taught me to be anti-war. I’m so glad it’s on my local pub bookshelf now
The front cover of a graphic novella “The Ton Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman” by Raymond Briggs. It shows two metal faces, with wild eyes and clenched teeth, saying “mine!” over a tiny island, which is saying “help!” The backdrop is a red white and blue cross

Only a few filmmakers make art, fewer still can make serious work that captures & revels in the utter bizarreness of human emotion & everyday life. A rare gift Anyway. Here are my parents enjoying David Lynch’s invitation to loose their heads in his work (Manchester International Festival 2019)

Right wing political parties continuing to fuel anti-migrant sentiment on the “hell site”
Tweet by UK Labour Party that reads: “The Tories lost control of our borders. Labour are taking it back.” Below is a photo of PM in front of a Union Jack flag with a headline stating: “Keir Starmer has organised the three largest deportation flights in UK history”

Solid points here, but claim that Christian nationalism is at odds w/ US democracy, state & values is itself “post-truth” (or wilful denial). Hegseth is extreme + dangerous but not anomalous. It’s a foundational value; long a key platform in many states. Currency: In God We Trust. Here’s Harris:
Tweet by Kamala Harris with 10.3K likes that reads:

In our nation, we owe loyalty not to a president or party, but to the Constitution of the United States, and to our conscience and our God.

My allegiance to all three is why I am here to say, while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign: The fight for freedom, for opportunity, and for fairness and the dignity of all people.

Peckham Library is just a beautiful place to write. Always busy but peaceful, inspiring in its displays and design. What a pleasure to sit serenely in a spaceship pod ‘quiet zone’, thinking silently with others on the power of words… great job, Southwark!

Looking forward to digging deeper into Klein’s (self-reflective) assessment of online self-branding as a consequence of capitalism/labour realities today that’s also monumentally destructive for the left… as I (re)build my own online persona on BlueSky(c) + watch other leftists do the same… 🫠

Klein kept quietly underscoring the necessity of robust theory for understanding social shifts. Her book’s dedication remembers others who’ve argued, demonstrated the same… Each also had an incredible capacity for empathy, which sharpened their analyses
A page in a book reads: IN MEMORIAM: Mike Davis, Barbara Ehrenreich, bell hooks, Leo Panitch
