Happy Mother's Day everyone 🌸 My latest substack post out now - an exploration of the single momfluencer trend in China and how truthful it a representation it is of the realities of single parenting sinobabble.substack.com/p/get-a-car-...

"Get a car. Get a house. Get a baby." The Weird World of China's Single Momfluencers
As legislation around children born to single mothers has changed, so have attitudes. Should the CCP embrace this trend as a birthrate Hail Mary?

The problem with China's Periphery
The transformation of a historically contested space into the next global industrial hub provides more challenges than distance and capital investment.

Am I the only one who finds all this RedNote stuff really underwhelming? Someone asked if I'd do an episode about it and I was like "to talk about what??" Seriously, is there even an interesting angle on this topic?

This is so weird. China is obsessed with the UNESCO lists, esp the intangible cultural heritage one, so it's likely insiders on the board worked to have it placed on the list. But it's crazy that a body dedicated to upholding 'culture' refuses to even analyse or dissect a decision like this

The US-China relationship remains a game of nerves. 🌏 Two nations with opposing worldviews. 💼 Trade wars, tech battles, territorial disputes. Expect another 4 years of headlines—but little real change. sinobabble.substack.com/p/how-china-...

How China is preparing for a new Trump Presidency
Not much has changed in the past four years, but this may serve to harden resolves. While some may hope for speedy resolutions, China plans to double down on key issues.

In geopolitics, Taiwan will likely remain a stalemate, while Biden backs Ukraine, and Xi calls for “peace” but does little to mediate. Trump might push China harder on issues like North Korea’s support for Russia, but Beijing benefits from US distractions.

Sinobabble @sinobabble.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
Trump will likely keep pushing the trade war through deepening tariffs (which he's just announced he will extend to Canada and Mexico), especially when it comes to the tech industry. But China is already working on getting around that - by setting up shop in Silicon Valley and poaching Americans

Sinobabble @sinobabble.bsky.social · 26/11/2024
Trump and Xi already have a well-established frenemies relationship, and no major issues were resolved during the last Trump presidency. A new Trump term will likely mean more of the same unresolved clashes over the same issues: geopolitics and the economy

China laid out 7 "pillars of wisdom" for US relations, emphasizing respect for sovereignty, dialogue, and avoiding redlines. But the undertone? A warning: "Containing China is unwise, unacceptable, and bound to fail."

I've always hated that term 'hallucination', but not only does it cover up the fact the computer is lying to you, but it's also pushing the idea that it's 'thinking' and therefore can 'hallucinate'. Just like you and me!
