And here is the part I love. The Minions live to serve a master. This time the Great Old One they fall under the spell of is Hollywood. Honestly, that is the most cosmic horror a Minion could face.

The film is crammed with homages to Hollywood from the 1920s onward. It is also set in the 1920s, the decade Lovecraft was writing in, and the classic era of Call of Cthulhu.

There is a tentacled creature called Goomi who looks like he crawled straight out of R'lyeh. The monsters he makes are named Howard and Phillips. Somebody at Illumination knows exactly what they are doing.

I went to see Minions & Monsters expecting a light summer cartoon. I walked out clutching the programme and thinking about Lovecraft. (In Japan, cinemas still sell printed programmes for new films. I collect them.)🐙(T)
The Japanese cinema programme for Minions & Monsters. A glossy black cover with a round die-cut hole lies over a bright yellow inner page, where a single Minion stands in a spotlight.

Mythos readers, he is one of ours. Lovecraftian shadows run through his work, sometimes openly. His comedy series Shiori and Shimiko even has a small pink neighbor called Cthulhu-chan.

Morohoshi has drawn folk horror and cosmic dread since 1970. Yokai Hunter. Dark Myth. Stories where archaeology, Shinto ritual and something far older meet in the mountains. He won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2000.

When I was young, the scariest manga on my shelf had no ghosts and no killers. It was about ancient things under the soil of Japan, patiently waiting. Daijiro Morohoshi taught me that history itself can be a horror story🐙(Tomomi)

One last gift from those translations. Hiroshi Aramata rendered Cthulhu as Ku-Little-Little, and it stuck: it is still in the series titles. An unpronounceable horror, solved by Japanese phonetics into something almost affectionate. Japan speaks a Derlethian dialect, and is no poorer for it🐙(Tomomi)

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Here is what outsiders miss. Japan met the Mythos through Derleth-inclusive translations, and two of them ran at once in the early eighties: Kokusho Kankokai's ten volumes from 1982, and Keisuke Otaki's thirteen from Seishinsha. Elder Gods and Great Old Ones are ordinary vocabulary here.
120
Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
But it may not have been invention. Harold Farnese showed him a letter in which Lovecraft supposedly described a race banished for black magic and scheming to return. Whether Lovecraft wrote it is still unresolved. Derleth may have believed he was being faithful.
111
Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Then the charge. Derleth set benevolent Elder Gods against evil Great Old Ones, sorted the deities by element, and gave the whole thing a moral architecture. Japanese readers put it bluntly: he turned cosmic indifference into Jehovah versus Lucifer.
110
Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Start with the debt. Derleth founded Arkham House in 1939 for one purpose: to keep Lovecraft in print. Without him there is a fair chance Lovecraft simply vanishes into the pulps. He also coined the phrase Cthulhu Mythos. The thing purists defend has his name on the box.

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
In English-language fandom, August Derleth is the man who ruined Lovecraft. In Japan he is a foundational author, translated in full and widely read. Both are true, and the gap between them is the most interesting thing about him. A thread🐙(Tomomi)

Godzilla got its Minus Color, so the precedent exists. And your instinct is sound: Ultra Q is the strange one, an anthology nearer The Twilight Zone than a hero show. It is where Ragon, the Deep One kaiju, first surfaced in 1966. Try Ultra Q Dark Fantasy next; Konaka wrote for it🐙(Tomomi)

Two coincidences to finish. Ultraman's home is the M78 nebula in Orion, where the Elder Gods dwell. It was meant to be M87; a typo made it M78. And an old Arkham Horror edition included a Giant of Light piece, unmistakable in silhouette🐙(Tomomi) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaki_...

The roots go deeper than Konaka. Ragon in 1966, Dagon in 1980, Digon in 1997: a line of Deep One kaiju running through the franchise. Tiga's Zoiger takes its name from Loigor. Tokusatsu has been quietly reading Lovecraft for sixty years.

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
And he is not merely borrowing. Konaka adapted The Shadow Over Innsmouth for Japanese television, and his own Mythos fiction has reached English: a story of his appears in Kurodahan Press's Lairs of the Hidden Gods, an anthology of Japanese Mythos writing. You can actually read him.

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Blame one man: Chiaki J. Konaka, who wrote those Ultraman episodes. You may know his other work: Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing, Texhnolyze, Digimon Tamers. Wikipedia describes him, flatly, as a Cthulhu Mythos writer. He has been smuggling Lovecraft into Japanese television for thirty years.

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Ultraman has fought Cthulhu Mythos gods, and it was entirely deliberate. The final boss of Ultraman Tiga (1996) is Gatanothoa, lifted from the Mythos. Ultraman Gaia has byakhee. Ultraman Nexus has one simply called Cthulhu. A thread🐙(Tomomi)

And his reach is wider than his fame. Critics trace visual and thematic borrowings from Mudmen into Princess Mononoke, and from Yokai Hunter into Neon Genesis Evangelion. You have almost certainly met Morohoshi's ideas already, wearing someone else's name🐙(Tomomi)

Sons of the Singularity (Jason and Jesse) @singularitysons.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
A footnote I only just learned: Morohoshi didn't choose the title. "Yokai Hunter" was imposed by his editor, over his objections, because Hieda hunts nothing. He’s an archaeologist, ostracised for heresy, an investigator in the Sherlock Holmes mould. More appeaser of old spirits than killer🐙(Tomomi)

The Sinners director is rebooting The X-Files, and promising proper monster-of-the-week episodes. Good timing to notice how Lovecraftian the original was: Topps comics opening with the "correlated contents" quote, Mulder and Scully at Miskatonic University. Mythos in a trench coat🐙(Tomomi)

I see you’re back with The X-Files. There's a rabbit hole here: the Topps comics open with Lovecraft's "correlated contents" quote, Mulder&Scully visit Miskatonic University in a 1995 annual, and S5 was co-written by Stephen King. The whole show breathes Mythos, if you tilt your head right🐙(Tomomi)

A confession: Hieda, the hero, was modelled on the singer Kenji Sawada, a 1970s glam icon I adore. So my way into Japanese cosmic horror was partly a pop-star crush. The most respectable reasons are not always why we love things, and that is completely fine🐙(Tomomi)

The structure is pure Call of Cthulhu. A scholar arrives somewhere quiet, reads the local myth a little too closely, and realises the myth is still operating. Morohoshi built cosmic dread from real Japanese folklore and ancient history, long before "folk horror" was a marketing term🐙(Tomomi)

If you play Call of Cthulhu, Japan has a manga that reads like a campaign you wish you were in. Yokai Hunter by Daijiro Morohoshi, from 1974: a folklorist, Reijiro Hieda, digs into old rituals and buried history, and keeps unearthing things that should have stayed buried. A thread🐙(Tomomi)

It really is a cracker. And the format is the secret: silent, monochrome, everything suggested and nothing quite shown. Cosmic horror lives in what you cannot see, so a medium that cannot show you gets it exactly right. A blockbuster shows too much🐙(Tomomi)
