The elephant in the room is housing benefit at somewhere between 20 and 30 billion pounds annually into the pockets of private landlords and the Government has yet to address this despite complaining bitterly about much smaller sums being spent elsewhere

Yawn. Ant Breach of Centre for Cities will love this. Alex Ely did a good job with the 2010 LHDG and we need to hang on to it and not let these money driven people build modern slums. I would have thought WFH would accelerate the need for more space or at least to maintain current standards...

Life on the street in early 1970s London was so different then. The bus conductors, newsagents, ticket collectors on the railway had a certain stiffness you don't find today. I'm sure it all came from WWII and no doubt that collective nature drove their decisions when it came to public provision.

I always come back to this back in those decades the country was still in a post war frame of mind and the council members had for the most part lived through the war either here or overseas. It was a mindset we have all benefitted from, and they are dying off now. At least that's the way I see it

Thank you for spotting the mosaics, they are one of the joys of 60s/70s buildings and when people complain about all the grey concrete of brutalism the mosaics are rarely mentioned. Park Hill has a few left.

Of the three you quote re industrialise is going to be the tough one since so much has changed. Mining was always dangerous and the pits were becoming less productive decades ago with small pits closing through the 1960s. Shipbuilding went to the Far East they do it better and cheaper ...

Objectively speaking I think the picture was about 200 lines which was lo-res and the tapes were a bit clunky. Sometimes progress is just a good thing. Smaller units with better picture quality is a good thing.
