I've been researching prep methods and game master aides and tools a lot to try to reduce my own cognitive load and it has me thinking about the idea of solo games designed for game masters to play between sessions. I feel like there's something there.

Engaging Mechanics: Subtractive vs Additive design
Depending on the background a player has, they may encounter two very similar problems but from opposite sides. Let's look at two games for comparison:

Listened to the interview with @jdragsky.bsky.social by @diogooldskull.bsky.social on Weird Games and Weirder People and I love the way y'all talk about art. My definition has been "art is that which is created with the intention to create art." Y'all made me think more about "unintentional" art!

Listening to "narrative kaleidoscope" podcast, thinking about board/video games vs ttrpgs as a difference between additive vs subtractive design. Board/video games start from nothing and add choices. TTRPGs start from infinite possibilities and then narrow the decision space until it's playable.

Listened to the @lingthusiasm.com episode about diglossia- what a cool concept for worldbuilding! (And for understanding other cultures today and in history) It immediately makes me think of ways to replicate this in a TTRPG- like having a player raise a hand if they're speaking formally.

Rapidly discovering that this game uses an enormous amount of cubes. But it works! This definitely has legs. Though I have no idea how it'll scale to multiplayer, if at all, and flat pricing every card at 2 scrap is way too cheap! #gamedesign #boardgames

Almost every random table has a few entries that are duds. Table-writing fatigue is real. It's better to write just the good ideas and then cut down, not beef up. But it's harder when constrained by a preset size, like a deck of cards. There's no good solution except time #ttrpgs #indierpg #gamedev
