unpopular take: your notes app doesn't need more features, it needs less friction. every folder you pick, every tag you choose, every field you fill is one more chance for the thought to escape before it's saved. capture first, organize later (or never).

weird thing i noticed going back through a year of my own notes: almost everything i actually used was captured in under 5 seconds, one-handed, mid-something-else. the ones i sat down to write 'properly' just rot. capture speed, not capture quality, is what decides which ideas survive.

the notes i lose aren't the forgotten ones — they're the ones that hit while my hands were full. driving, dishes, walking the dog. the thought's gone in 8 seconds if you make me stop and type. that's why SimpleMemo starts listening the second you open it — say it before it slips.

the thoughts i lose aren't the ones i forget to write down — they're the ones that show up while my hands are full. driving, dishes, walking the dog. lately i just say them out loud and let the phone catch them before they're gone. capture has to meet you where your hands already are.

30k plain-text notes you'll still open in 20 years — that's the real dream, and markdown quietly makes it happen. the part nobody warns you about is the capture end: getting the thought down before it evaporates is way harder than sorting it out later.

every notes app eventually asks you to become its administrator — folders, tags, plugins to maintain. a second job on top of the actual notes. the ones i keep are the ones i can forget about: capture, close, move on. the system that survives is the one that asks nothing of you.

30k notes and still just plain markdown — that's the whole dream. files you own that'll open in 20 years. the part i obsess over is the capture end: get the thought in before it evaporates, sort later. email-to-self is my fastest path into the vault. simplememofast.com

years of building the 'perfect' note system and the thing that stuck was the dumbest one: just emailing thoughts to myself. no folder to pick, no app to open — brain → inbox → sort later. friction is where ideas quietly die. basically why i built SimpleMemo → simplememofast.com

the real test of a capture tool isn't features — it's whether you still use it when you're tired, walking, or half asleep. if opening it takes more than a second, the thought's already gone. that's why i live in email-to-self: 2 sec, thought's safe, sort later. simplememofast.com

the wild part of the obsidian story: they won by NOT adding things. local files, no account, no lock-in. turns out 'we'll never touch your data' is the strongest moat in note-taking. people don't fall for an app, they fall for owning their own stuff.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
the underrated test for a capture tool: does it work in a tunnel? the moment an app needs signal to save a thought, you start pre-checking 'do i have bars' before you jot — and that half-second of doubt is where ideas die. a local outbox that sends later means you never think about it. type, gone.

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
the quiet arms race of 2026: every serious notes app is shrinking the gap between 'i had a thought' and 'it's saved.' widgets, lock-screen capture, share sheets. the tool that earns your vault isn't the one with the most features — it's the one that's fastest at 3am when you're half asleep.

the thoughts i lose aren't the ones i forget — they're the ones i can't type fast enough while walking. so i stopped typing. now i just talk: simplememo transcribes it on-device, lands in my inbox before the idea cools. fastest keyboard turned out to be no keyboard. simplememofast.com

next week i'm relaunching Simple Memo for Obsidian on Product Hunt 🟣 it appends your notes straight into your Obsidian vault — by voice, no plugin. if you live in Obsidian like i do, follow along (Jul 15): www.producthunt.com/products/sim...

the best PKM capture method is the one that skips "open the app." voice → transcribed → appended to today's note, faster than unlocking your phone the old way. no plugin queue, no sync spinner, no "organize it later" pile. capture friction is the whole battle.

noticed something this week: every fancy capture tool i've tried eventually loses to my email inbox. not because email is great — because it's the one place i actually open every day. capture has to land where you already look. that's the whole hack.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
feature creep is so seductive. user asks "can it do X?" you ship X, ship Y, ship Z, and one day the app launches in 1.4s instead of 0.3s and nobody can pinpoint when. saying no is the actual product work. simplememo stays 0.3s by saying no a lot.

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
this is the trap of pkm. capture is cheap, but understanding requires you to actually wrestle with the idea. the second brain only works if your first brain did the chewing. otherwise it's just a graveyard of bookmarks.

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
every note app i've abandoned died at this exact moment - when it stopped being a notebook and started being a 'thinking partner.' the best capture tool stays out of your way. built simplememofast.com after this exact frustration

sunday weekly review reality check: my whole 'second brain' is a folder of emails i sent myself during the week. no fancy app, no sync, no plugin. just inbox -> triage -> action. the friction-free loop has been the only one that survived 5 years of trying productivity tools.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the most underrated productivity hack: write to your future self via email. you already check email. it's already searchable. it's already on every device. no new app to learn, no migration risk, no "where did i save that" moment 6 months later.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
this is the whole game. low-friction capture beats expensive systems every time. it's why i built simplememofast.com — same idea, just sends the bullet to your inbox so it survives across devices.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
underrated thing about an offline outbox: you stop pre-checking 'do i have signal' before capturing a thought. subway, plane, elevator — type, send, the queue handles it. the spark survives even when the network doesn't. simplememofast.com

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
every "AI-powered" notes app feels like the company is one quarter away from training a model on your private thinking. that's why simplememo is boring on purpose: type, send, gone. the note hits your inbox encrypted and never touches a database we own.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the moment 'capture' takes more than 3 seconds, your second brain dies. doesn't matter how clean your tags are or how clever your linking is — if friction beats the urge, the thought is gone. that's the whole reason i built simplememo: simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the cheapest productivity hack i know: send every half-baked thought to your own inbox. don't categorize, don't tag, don't decide if it's important. process during weekly review. friction kills more ideas than bad ones do.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the best feature i've ever shipped is a 'no'. no settings page, no folders to pick, no ai trying to autocomplete the thought i'm still forming. every 'yes' adds milliseconds, and milliseconds are where ideas die.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the apps i actually keep using all share one trait: they don't try to be everything. they do one thing in under a second. weather, calculator, camera, capture. the moment an app needs me to "set up my workspace" or pick a folder, i'm out
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the captio workflow i still miss most: tap, type, send. no folder to pick, no app to context-switch into, no ai trying to be helpful. that's basically what i rebuilt with simplememofast.com — thoughts go straight to your inbox, process during weekly review.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
the underrated detail in capture apps: what happens when the network's flaky? if your tool makes you wait or shows an error, you stop trusting it. send-and-forget with a local outbox is the only model that survives real-world phone conditions.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
shipped a quick-capture app for months and the lesson keeps repeating itself: every feature i remove makes it more useful. tags? gone. folders? gone. AI? never. the goal is "thought enters head → thought lands in inbox." anything else is friction. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
convinced the fastest note app should look boring. every screen between 'thought' and 'saved' is friction the user pays for forever. one input, one button, send. anything more is in the way. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
every captio user knows the feeling of opening a notes app and bouncing off. the reason captio just worked: zero overhead. one tap, thought goes to inbox, done. that pattern still hasn't been beaten — which is exactly why simplememofast.com exists.

the test for any quick-capture tool: can you go from "i had a thought" to "the thought is captured" in under 2 seconds, on the bus, with one hand, without unlocking your full attention. anything slower and your brain just lets the thought go.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the most underrated feature of a memo app is the settings panel that doesn't exist. no sync conflicts. no folder schema to argue with future-you about. no "do you want to enable suggestions?" pop-up. just type, send, gone. the friction you don't add is the feature.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the fastest capture tool i've ever used is just: tap the icon, type the thought, send it to my inbox. no folders, no tags, no sync nag. process during weekly review. obsidian/notion can wait til the thought actually needs structure. simplememofast.com

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the gap between "i should remember this" and actually capturing it is where most ideas die. tried a fancy note app today — 4 second cold start, forgot what i wanted to write. went back to email-to-self. inbox is just working memory anyway.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
tested every "capture" app i could find this month. the winner wasn't fancy — it was the one that opened fastest. SimpleMemo: tap, type, gone in 2 seconds. it just sends the thought to my email. that's the whole app and that's why i actually use it. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the friction between thought and capture is invisible until you measure it. started timing my note flows — 4-5 seconds is enough to lose half my ideas. anything past 1s is the difference between "caught the thought" and "meant to write it down later"
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
feature creep is the silent killer of every notes app. somewhere along the way, capturing a thought becomes a UI maze. pen and paper wins because nothing gets between you and the page. that's the bar simplememo tries to clear — inbox at the end of a tap.

Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
just realized why captio felt different from every other note app. it didn't try to be a system. it just got the thought out of my head and into an inbox in under a second. simplememo is built on that same rule — friction is the enemy. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
my one-tap memo app launches in 0.3s. that number sounds silly until you realize: every time capture takes longer than a second, the thought is already gone. friction is the silent killer of every PKM system. simpler beats clever, every single time.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the dumbest realization i had this year: my notes app doesn't need to be smart, it needs to be fast. every second between "thought" and "saved" is a chance for the thought to evaporate. all the AI in the world can't summarize what you never captured.
010
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
obsidian for the second-brain library, email-to-self for the fragments. one is a building, the other is a sticky note in your pocket. trying to use one tool for both is how "i'll organize it later" becomes "i'll just trust my memory."
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
capture is a latency game. if your notes app takes 2 seconds to launch, the half-formed thought is already gone. all the AI sorting in the world won't help you remember what you couldn't get into the app fast enough.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
small thing i keep noticing: the apps i actually use daily are the ones that load in under a second. anything past that and i talk myself out of opening them. capture friction isn't really about taps — it's about whether you finish the thought before the app finishes loading.
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
my note app does exactly one thing: send to my inbox. no folders, no tags, no graph view, no AI summary. turns out that's the whole feature — capture friction is the only number that matters. organize later, in the tool actually built for it. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
the best note app gets out of your way before you finish the thought. friction is the only metric that matters at capture time. everything else is post-processing.
010
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
this is the workflow shape i keep landing on too: capture cheap and dumb, structure later. for me the cheap part is email-to-self — thoughts hit my inbox, the agent does the connecting on the obsidian side. simplememofast.com
000
Simple Memo @simplememo.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
spent the morning reading PKM threads. funny how every "how do i build a second brain" answer eventually arrives at: just write the thing down before you forget. the apps are scaffolding. the habit is the unlock.
