Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes is one of the greatest ever episodes of television.

They've been planting the seeds of it for decades. Hell, the "legalizing gay marriage is a slippery slope to people marrying their pets" guy is the speaker of the house now. Bad times...

Check out his American Utopia concert film from 2020 too, if you haven't. Incredible stuff.

People don't like the mass surveillance apparatus that is constantly in the news due to police misuse? Weird.

I would put a lot of free, open-source software in that category. Unfortunately AI is shitting up that space pretty bad at the moment.

So what would be the equivalent affirmation for a cis character? Or are they treated as "default" and not granted characterization based on their gender identity? I'm not trying to be argumentative, to be clear. I'm trying to understand the line between meaningful representation and pandering here.
100
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
Meaning what? What visual representations do you feel are lacking? I wish you would expand on your thoughts. I'm trying to understand you.
100
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
And within the playing of the video game, how does that manifest? I'm trying to understand what it is you're looking for. In my experience, the cis-ness of the characters rarely comes up in games. So who's to say 90% of characters aren't already trans if you, the player, says they are?
100
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
What would be the functional difference in a typical big-budget game between a cis and trans character?

simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
And you'll also notice that the conversation rarely focuses on fixing the harmful things about social media. We act like social media is some immutable thing and the only solution is a ban that requires mass surveillance for everyone that only serves to slightly delay that harm for children.

I like how far they went in the opposite direction too. Instead of chasing high tech trends they just released a bare-bones, affordable laptop and it sold like hotcakes.

There are three types of people in this world...

simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
Stability requires balance. Our current environmental impact points towards our current population being past the point of balance, causing instability. Increasing that instability isn't going to get us back to the necessary balance.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I'm pointing out that a solution is available. Update your software if your current version doesn't fit your needs or convert the WebP to something you can use. The world isn't going to stop just because you want to use software a decade out of date.

Okay? What does moaning about it do though? We can only live in the present. Things change. We adapt. That's humanity's whole thing.

Yeah, they're typically 25-35% smaller than JPEGs. They also support transparency and lossless compression, neither of which is supported by JPEG. There's a whole world of free graphic software outside of GIMP these days.

You sure do like to complain, huh? There are quite a few free ones on that list. Krita, GIMP, Aseprite (if you compile it yourself), to name a few. Feel free to click around the list yourself if you want to find more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP#Gr...

It' the same issue USB-C had. Adoption was slow enough that it caused occasional friction with people. It took the Windows Photo app more than a decade to add support, for example. But like USB-C, I don't think we'll see anyone clamoring to go back to the old standards once adoption is wide enough.

Oh I don't expect the concept of nations to die in my lifetime or anything. It would take many, many generations just to lay the groundwork for the possibility of that ever happening, and I don't think it's the kind of thing that could be done by force. It would require humanity to choose it.
010
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
I very much hope they do. I'm a "one human race without borders" kind of guy. Nations served their purpose for a time, but we're in the post-internet era now and I don't think we've stepped back and taken the time to reckon with what that connected world should mean for human governance.

California's population density is a bit of an outlier that isn't representative of the country at large. Imagine the current population of Germany spread out across 6 or 7 times as much land and you'll have a better picture of the typical population density in the US.

I hear what you're saying, but there is a large logistical issue to consider: France: 543,941 km², 67 million people, 23% of which live in the metro area surrounding the capital city. US: 9,833,520 km², 342 million people, 2% of which live in the metro area surrounding the capital city.

I feel that’s a distinction without a difference in practice when the scales of power are as unbalanced as they’ve become, unfortunately.
110
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
We have coffee already. But it’s not making the line go up fast enough, so we have to do whatever it takes to boost productivity towards infinity while also doing everything we can to reduce costs to zero. It’s not realistically attainable, but that’s the modern CEO mindset and they have the power.
110
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
To use your drug analogy, the way LLMs are being positioned is similar to a CEO laying off half the company because it’s cheaper to give the remaining half cocaine to up their productivity rather than retaining a larger staff. It ends up hurting both those who were laid off and those who remain.
110
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
I’ll also add that we’re seeing it on a smaller scale too with people coming out in numbers to protest against data centers being built in their communities and being ignored.
010
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
It’s great that’s happening, but oligarchs are realizing more and more that there is little consequence to ignoring protests and just pushing through what they want. We had the largest protest in US history back in March and it led to absolutely no change. I worry that will spread to Europe soon.
210
simple kid @simplekid.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
I would liken it to nuclear technology. The technology isn’t inherently dangerous, but when the only people with the capital to leverage that technology are choosing to use it in dangerous ways rather than for the common good, you have to start weighing the actual practical benefit. Not the theory.

I try to keep up with EU politics and there's a lot of good happening with consumer protections, but I worry about the spread of right wing ideologies and erosion of civil liberties. A lot of what I see over there reminds me of where we were a decade ago. All democracies are being tested right now.
