From a perspective on shipping : attached below is an English summary of the Norwegian article. As expected the majority of traffic is Chinese and Russian vessels. It’s worth noting that Russia has developed nuclear powered ice-breakers, partly for its arctic resources, but also used on this route.

This will be interesting - Mansour is one of the six ‘Bani Fatima’ brothers; all six are ‘full brothers’ and the sons of Zayed (previous ruler of UAE) and Fatima, his favourite wife (he had four wives). Four of the brothers rule UAE in position of ruler, deputy ruler, security and foreign affairs.

It’s not that he did nothing; he contrived to ensure that the defences were weakened that day. Take a look at the extensive nature of the Gaza border walls defence systems that miraculously didn’t work that morning, or the camera coverage the recordings from which have been “lost”.

Oh dear; there could be a lot of embarrassment over this recent ‘terrorist’ beat-up. The 5 suspects were all released after 36 hours, which is significant (see image below). How about stealing diesel from farms, not attacking an RAF base ???

I thought knowing what the super balances were for the 18 - 39 age group might be relevant to this discussion 👇 The stats are from the ATO, are for June 2026, for both male and female, and are median and mean values (there is a heavy skew to the data for each age group and gender)

Apparently not a new usage, although for engineers (such as I) its application as a verb is strange 🤷🏻‍♂️

The SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) have just been meeting; unsurprising that people don’t know because it’s not covered by western news channels. But the SCO is a significant block of Eurasian countries 👇 including Iran, China, Russia, Pakistan. . . .

Muu…uum. . . What did you say ‘juxtaposition’ means . . . {I’m beginning to think this is a deliberate ploy by the Grauniad} [and you need to be a Private Eye fan from the ‘80’s to understand that deliberate mis-spelling]

Ten commissioners on the productivity commission, 7 from Melbourne, (yes seven) the other 3 also from eastern states. Go on, tell us how that’s a balanced composition and not another example of an old-buddies closed club. PS how are the Victorian state’s finances doing these days . . .

The most likely response to an Israeli attack on Turkey - even an unprovoked one - is Article 4 consultations and a US veto of any consensus motion in favour of Turkey which is effectively guaranteed under the current administration. Some things to consider 👇

Both the power and water demands of AI hypercentres can be provided by locating them at the coast, next to the desalination plant and the SMR; providing both power and water needed by data centres and into the supply for community and industry. @jessicaperthwa.bsky.social 👇

That report is from 2022 - are you seriously suggesting that the scale of AI data centre power demand was properly understood in 2022. Attached is a table that shows the key differences between ‘enterprise’ and ‘AI hyperscale’ data centres. The scale of this technology is now increasing incredibly.

There would be much less conflict between the demands of AI data centres and existing power demands if Australia embraced the inevitable. There are 192 operating data centres and 90 awaiting approvals in Australia. AI-dc’s will have greater power demands so let’s plan for them in our infrastructure.

I’d be less concerned about mrp and more alert to the polling being conducted between April 29th and May 14th. With the budget on May 12th it means that the opinions expressed to the pollsters was either pre-budget or in the immediate aftermath furore which erupted. Not exactly ‘current thinking’.

“We need a Royal Commission” is the response to almost every issue. Since 2009 there have been 24 (in 16 years) - 11 Commonwealth, 6 in Vic and SA and 1 in WA. They are a cash cow for lawyers and ‘mates’. I did a little research into recommendations, implementation and costs. DM if you want details.

I did some investigating of the position on fracking adopted by the states and territories - to find quite a bit of diversity. The Commonwealth has no general power to ban or permit onshore fracking; its jurisdiction is limited to offshore Commonwealth waters and to EPBC Act environmental triggers.

There has been subtle discrimination against permanent residents for a few years but what is being proposed takes that to a new level. Available data shows permanent residents are 6.9% of the population (27.6 million) whilst 8.8 million (citizens and residents) were born overseas.

As a “local boy” Dylan Thomas’ work was inevitably a subject for study when I was in school near Swansea. In addition to a comprehensive collection of his poetry I have all of the recordings of Dylan reading his poetry and a movie of Under Milk Wood with some notable actors.

Camp Baird is within the Al Minhad Air Base operated by the UAE Air Force - it’s a large Air Base used by several nations (mostly NATO) for *transport and logistics support* for operations throughout the ME (eg Afghanistan). There’s a runway (very long) which is why it’s the Wedgetail’s home base.

What’s missed in reporting today is the importance of how the 20% applies to the LNG exported on the spot market ie it excludes contracted longer term sales. That proportion is about 15% of LNG exports but varies across not only the states but also companies.

Simon Simple @simonsimplex.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
The plan is to reserve up to 20% of gas volumes exported on the spot market or under short term contract (<12 month). Here is an assessment of how much gas is exported and what proportion is on the spot/short term market.

The compilation of a comprehensive listing of MPs and Senators academic and professional qualifications is a much bigger job than it might appear; there isn’t a consolidated APH list for current members that I can find, just individual entries from which it must be abstracted. A first pass review 👇

Much is made of the storage of fuel in the U.S., organised by Angus Taylor, but it’s never mentioned that it followed the first time a ‘mandatory stockpile’ was legislated - by Morrison’s gov’t !! Albanese is just continuing the policy. Also pertinent is that Aus does NOT have a strategic reserve.
