I occasionally try to explain and comment on ME research, or even contribute to it. And I advocate for more and better research.

Powerful poem about the medical mistreatment of ME/CFS patients, published by The Healing Muse. Written by my friend Veronica Ashenhurst, who has severe ME. Read the whole poem here: (@roberthmcmullen.bsky.social) www.s4me.info/threads/publ...

The hi-tech nanopore @nanoporetech.com DNA sequencing method behind the £4.7m study to help crack #Mecfs is simple at heart. 1. Thread a strand of DNA through a tiny hole in a membrane- 2. each DNA letter passing through the pore creates a disticnt signal 3. read off the DNA sequence

That would make sense. Also, omicron and later strains were upper respiratory tract infections like common colds. These are generally less severe than lower respiratory tract ones, like pneumonia – and spread better, hence their success.

I'd have been waiting as well, and in the end, I decided there was only one way to make sure it happened (extraordinary good luck and a frankly amazing collaboration of people mostly with ME and those close to them. Getting the replication in DecodeME was a big bonus.

Most of the DNA differences studies are single letters. In the pic above (and here), one person has the letter A, while another has the letter G at the same position. DecodeME looks to see if people with ME have significant differences at these letters compared with controls. Cont...

How DecodeME looked for DNA differences: DecodeME was a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Looking at each of 3 billion letters costs too much. So GWAS only in those places where people often have different letters from each other. About 800,000 place for DecodeME. Pic explained below 3/

#DecodeME in case you a quick reminder about DNA and how it underpins this study: DNA carries the instructions for how to make and run a human body. It’s effectively a very long string of four different chemicals, named A, T, C and G for short. 1/
