A portrait sketch in Rebelle 8. I mixed loose linework with halftone texture, then stopped way before it became too polished. The slight imbalance is part of what I like about it.

Yesterday, I used Pocket Easel for the first time and enjoyed how simple it felt. The interface is very minimal, yet intuitive and easy to understand. Nothing gets in the way, so you can focus on colour, shape, and composition.

It is strange how social media filters content. I can post a technical study of a life model, just a back view, and it gets flagged as "suggestive." Meanwhile, the feed is full of posts designed specifically to be provocative that pass without a word.

If you don't feel like drawing today, you probably need to draw more. A few signs you’ve hit a slump: - You’re actively looking for excuses to avoid it. - Art has slipped down your daily to-do list. - The thought of starting drawing or painting feels like a chore.

I prefer drawing from life, but it is not always practical for a daily routine. Nothing beats the depth of a live model, though photo references usually win for convenience. How do you handle your daily practice? Do you make it to live sessions or stick to your desk?

Time-boxing a drawing/painting practice to an hour or less is a game-changer. It exposes mistakes rather than hiding them under layers of detail. Practice shouldn't be about perfection... it should be about telling your next challenge.

Many artists ask me if they need a "signature style" to get hired. On a major IP, I actually look for the opposite. I need artists who can adapt their hand to fit our specific world. A versatile portfolio is often more hirable than a one-style gallery.

Even after decades professional artists still evolve and abandon old styles for new ones. Don’t be afraid to outgrow yourself. Focus on the process, and the style will find you.

If I had to rebuild all my drawing skills from scratch, I’d do this Draw every day. Small studies. No pressure. Just mileage. Learn fundamentals again. Value, light, shape. Tools don't matter. Share the artworks early. Stay consistent. Improve in public! What would you do if you had to start over?
