A thousand thanks to Toni Sant for this generous and thought-provoking review of "Media of the Masses" (@stanfordpress.bsky.social) in the Journal of Mediterranean Studies! To have someone engage so closely with your book is truly a gift.

“Commotion” indeed! Cultural critics held Adawiya responsible for the “death” of public taste and declared “war” on cassettes carrying popular music they deemed to be “vulgar” and posing a greater danger to citizens than cocaine. guq.qatar.georgetown.edu/news/preview...

A book I will absolutely be reading. "Reconstructing patient histories, Beth Baron traces how medical knowledge was created through women's bodies and by those treating them. The result is a new understanding of the body, medicine, and colonialism in Egypt."

Next month, I'll have the chance to share how "Media of the Masses" came to be and where my research on media in Middle East history is going at Wesleyan University. To be able to do so down the road from where my journey with Arabic began two decades ago is special. @stanfordpress.bsky.social

There is nothing better than arriving back on campus to teach your first class of the fall and finding handwritten letters in your mailbox from students the prior spring. Notes like these are such a treasure.

Out next March! “Through this rich micro-history of a city in transition, Dallasheh restores Palestinians as active players in their own history, not merely passive victims of the colonial states under which they live—and shows what it cost Palestinians to survive in their homeland after 1948.”

16 years ago, I enrolled in an Arabic language program in downtown Cairo that changed my life. This summer, one of my students started as a fellow in the same program: the Center for Arabic Study Abroad. A full circle moment and an experience, I hope, that will be equally transformative for him.

Look at what arrived in the mail today! To see this senior honors thesis take shape, from an undergraduate’s idea last year to something I can now hold in my hand (and proudly display on my bookshelf), was simply awesome.. Working with such students has been the highlight of my time at Dartmouth.

Speaking with fencers and their families this past week in Portland at Summer Nationals was such a joy. For anyone wishing to learn more about college recruiting or what it’s like to be a student-athlete in college, please feel free to DM me. I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned.

Fencing has shaped who I am. This week in Portland, it’s been a joy to share some aspects of my journey as a scholar-athlete and the lessons I learned with high school students, who aspire to compete in college, and their parents, who are invested in both their athletic careers and academic success.

A student evaluation that made me smile today. I, however, should really be the one expressing my appreciation. Without the investment of students, our discussions would not be what they are: a space to expand our horizons. To all of my students, thank you for being such a source of inspiration.
