You just never know what will bring angry tears to the eyes of the reply-guy nutcases, I guess

I rarely post anything controversial, I think (not that I have today either), so I very rarely attract the weirdos on here. It's easy to forget they exist, and a shock when you encounter them. Can't imagine how people who face that stuff all the time cope, tbh

Kindly unfollow me, I have absolutely no idea who you are and I couldn't give a fuck

Both your posts were aggressive, for absolutely no reason. I'm gatekeeping nothing. 100% of people who know who I'm talking about would recognise the quote. What's wrong with you? Are you simple, or just a total arsehole? Or both?

Please refer to my previous reply: if you don't know who I'm talking about then you won't know him. Don't think I can make that any clearer for you to understand, sorry. Also don't know why you can talk about being respectful when writing weird aggressive reply-guy bullshit to someone you don't know

Helps who? If you don't know who I'm talking about then you won't know him, and I don't care

The world lost an absolute titan of the music industry yesterday. Most people won't even know his name, but the influence of his band can scarcely be matched. My life would likely have been entirely different without what they did for music. Those who know will know. Lay down your soul...

I really enjoyed working on this volume. Fantastic sexy poetry and short stories from an unjustly forgotten writer!

This is the first MHRA-organized event since I've been working here; we used to run events quite a lot many years ago, but not for a while. This one was my idea: volume 100 of a periodical publication is a once-in-a-lifetime thing to happen, it had to be marked. I hope people will come!

Please come along to this if you're in/near London! There'll be three interesting talks plus a drinks reception after (well, two interesting talks and one talk by me)

Listening to a high-up guy from a semi-major US university press talk about the importance of learned societies, and recalling the extremely rude and un-collegiate email I received from a staff member there when I suggested a collaborative initiative with the society I work for. Hmmmmm

Simon Davies @simonfd.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I don't think so. No scriptoria either, but interesting that this discussion suggests there must be a press because of how many books there are -- it could just be lots of MS copying! www.reddit.com/r/teslore/co...

Simon Davies @simonfd.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes that's true! I'm sure there are mentions of presses in TES though. I'm gonna go check in on the Black Horse Courier later.

The Fallout 4 one is so annoying because they have a press but the newspaper they supposedly use it for is clearly handwritten 🥲

Increasingly thinking that rather than open access (e)books, all I want are cheap paperback editions that either I or my institutions’ library can buy and actually read 📚

Spending today working on my talk on the history of the Annual Bibliography for our London event in October (join us!). It's going to be so hard compressing everything into the time available. Also I haven't given a public lecture for about 10 years... www.mhra.org.uk/news/2026/08...

The persecution of Brighton University staff by the management there has been probably the longest and most bitter battle of the current HE crisis. Immeasurable harm done to staff wellbeing. But their situation is a warning to all others: this will come for you in the end too.

Final proof checks this week to the Annual Bibliography of English Language & Literature for 2025. Still published in print after 100+ years! Not many subscribers these days (most access the online version), but it's nice that there are still a dedicated few. The print volume has its own value.

When @themhra.bsky.social was founded in 1918, it was reported in The Times, and the Minister of Education sent a letter of support and good wishes. How times have changed eh! For newspapers, politicians, and the MHRA itself...

But there are indexed journals that are just as old/prestigious as the commercial ones that are published by non-profit publishers. Commercial publishers don’t have a monopoly on prestige. There are plenty of alternatives.

Simon Davies @simonfd.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
It’s only academics themselves whi can change the situation, by voting with their work
010
Simon Davies @simonfd.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Thats true; the larger UPs are really non-profit in name only, they act the same as the commercial publishers. But still: not all academic publishers!
