Ending homelessness is possible, but it requires ambition. We know the solutions, now we need sustained investment in resources that prevent homelessness before it happens and that provide the supports people need to secure a home.

As Simon Week drew to a close, the latest homelessness figures showed yet another increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness, the highest level ever recorded in Ireland 📈 The figures are a stark reminder of why these conversations matter and why we cannot afford to lose momentum.

Budget 2027 is an opportunity for Government to demonstrate that preventing homelessness is a national priority. We need investment in the services and supports that can intervene early, before even more people reach crisis point.

With Budget 2027 just around the corner, we are pleading with Government to allocate budget for homeless prevention. With this year’s Simon Week campaign, we are highlighting the reality that almost two-thirds of adults experiencing homelessness are facing it alone.

This is the worst it’s ever been. The latest figures show that 17,885 people were living in emergency accommodation in August 2026. 60 single adults and 358 more people than last month are recognised in these figures. This dramatic increase is totally unacceptable 📈 #SpéirGorm

Simon Communities of Ireland are highlighting single adults experiencing homelessness, the largest group experiencing homelessness in Ireland. They account for well over 3 in 5 adults in emergency accommodation. But before homelessness, these people are parents, neighbours, friends and family.

We cannot continue to respond to homelessness once someone has already lost their home and entered emergency accommodation. Prevention must be the priority.

Simon Communities of Ireland @simoncommunity.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
It is increasingly frustrating that homelessness does not appear to be seen as a crisis by our elected representatives. Behind every one of these figures is a person, a family, a child or an older person who does not have a place to call home.

Ireland’s homelessness crisis has deepened over the last decade, and there’s still no sense of urgency from Government. Today, the latest figures reveal that 17,527 people were living in emergency accommodation in July 2026. #SpéirGorm

Though progress has been made on housing and homelessness at an EU-level in recent years, we need to go further to ensure housing reaches the most marginalised. The Irish Presidency provides a rare opportunity for Ireland to lead on one of our most pressing national challenges.

Across Simon services, we regularly meet people who have been turned away from one local authority & told to try another. We need to be confident that change in the law will not make that situation worse. At the moment we do not have the detail needed to assess the impact of the proposed measures.
