Great session at the old Fremantle Prison on international justice with legendary lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, inspiring Palestinian colleague Samiha Olwan, and the indomitable Sophie McNeill. Glad to be part of this Totally Lit Festival in my hometown for the first time.

The LRA were the stuff of nightmares. I had the honour of working with survivors of their atrocities in Uganda. I'll be speaking at the Perth screening of this amazing documentary film, "The Comfort Dogs of Uganda." Details⬇️🇺🇬

Spent today campaigning against Hanson’s One Nation in the Secret Harbour by-election, south of Perth. Having lived in the US under Trump, I don’t want to watch another cheap MAGA imitation divide communities, scapegoat immigrants, and undermine democracy.

Convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić is dead. He was criminally responsible for genocide at Srebrenica. Today I’m thinking of this mother and son I met in the graveyard on the 20th anniversary. The suffering Mladic inflicted should never be diminished or denied.🇧🇦

Been “off the grid” for a few days in the remote wheatbelt region of Western Australia - just hanging out with the kangaroos, emus and desert wildflowers. Back online now.

Describing civilian deaths in airstrikes as a “mistake” or “collateral damage” does not exonerate you. All potential war crimes require investigation and accountability.

Kenya will face a crucial election in 2027. In these times of creeping authoritarianism globally, Kenya can play a crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights and humanitarianism. (My comments on @citizentvkenya) 🇰🇪

Love these “Aussie” posters of real people from history who had to apply for a resident exemption under the White Australia Policy. Can’t believe there are still people who want to bring back these cruel and contemptible policies. #Pelicans

The best way to honour the memory of those murdered at #Srebrenica is to build a world where inaction, indifference and impunity are no longer tolerated. #R2P #WeRemember

Frontline humanitarian workers like Winnie and Nimo from @cvt.org in Kenya are true civil society heroes. So happy to catch up with these old friends and be inspired by their resilience, courage and commitment to building a better world.🇰🇪

One of the highlights of my trip to Kenya has been the opportunity to engage with key figures from civil society, such as David Maraga, Emeritus Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, and Claris Ogangah, current Chairperson of the Kenyan National Commission for Human Rights. 🇰🇪

What is the future of human rights and international justice in a fractured world? Thanks to @AusHCKenya for partnering with @MurdochUni for this event. Now is not a time for despair. We are here to shape the future, not to fear it. 🇰🇪🌍

Kenya has recognised the State of Palestine since 1988, and this was one of the first official Palestinian embassies in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 81% of UN member countries now recognise Palestine as a sovereign state.

The whole world has fallen in love with Lumumba Vea, and his statue poses at #FIFAWorldCup. But he also used his platform to stage a dignified protest against the global media silence re: ongoing atrocities in eastern #DRCongo. 🇨🇩🏟️⚽️

About 64 countries still criminalize same-sex relationships. In around a dozen countries, being LGBT+ is still punishable by death. But… 🏳️‍🌈

Australia’s democracy is 125 years old but we still don’t have a national human rights act. Time to remedy that precarious legal shortcoming. (Listening to @HughdeKretser of Australia’s Human Rights Commission who clearly agrees!)

China wants the world to forget #Tiananmen Square. But 37 years later the mass protests from that summer remain a potent symbol of human rights and hope. Evidence and memory of the 4 June massacre can never be erased. #WeRemember 🇨🇳

In 65 countries it is still illegal to be LGBT+. In 7 it is punishable by death. In 2026, no one should be persecuted, prosecuted, or killed, because of who they love. LGBT+ rights are human rights.🏳️‍🌈 #Pride2026

The #Ukraine war is a war on civilians. On 8 May the WHO announced there have been more than 3,000 attacks on healthcare and transport facilities since February 2022 – the highest number recorded globally. Ukrainian civilians continue to be killed for Putin’s imperial hubris.🇺🇦

It was great to talk to a lecture hall full of UWA Law students today about international justice and atrocity prevention, alongside Jeff Sizemore and Wibke Timmermann. The world certainly needs a new generation of upstanders for human rights. Thanks Jessica Kerr for organizing.

Great meeting with Sanjay Wijesekera, new UNICEF Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, and his colleagues. In these times of global crisis, universities and the UN should be deepening partnerships to protect human rights and promote humanitarianism.

Global military spending surged to a record high of $2.2887 trillion in 2025 – that’s 776 times higher than the United Nations' regular budget. The ugly truth is that diplomacy and humanitarianism are failing globally because major powers choose to invest in war machines instead.

The President of the United States has lost his mind, threatening 90 million Iranians with war crimes and throwing an epic profane tantrum. Activating the 25th Amendment has now become essential for American democracy and humanity.

After 15 years living and working outside Australia, I just re-enrolled to vote 🗳️. It was an easy online process overseen by a neutral commission. This is what you do in functioning democracies - you encourage and enable citizens to vote.

Jesse Jackson marched with Dr Martin Luther King Jr and dedicated his life to advancing human rights for all Americans. He should be remembered as someone who stood on the right side of history when it mattered the most.🇺🇸
