In 1944, Georges Favre published a biography of the composer François-Adrien Boieldieu (“Doesn’t he know there’s a war on?”). The London Library received its copy in October 1945. Since then, only two readers have taken the book out: one in 1983, and then me. My thanks to a far-sighted librarian.

I just had a nice note from my publisher, forwarding a reader’s comment on my Friedo Lampe translation: ‘I thought At the Edge of Night was impressive. Very vivid scenes, and a sinister undertone, as befits the historical era. What a sad and unnecessary death of the author.’

I was pleased to come across this book, from 1860, which includes Milton’s Chalfont St Giles and Horton (where his father, also John, a composer, lived); William Penn at Jordans; Gray at Stoke Poges; Shelley’s Marlow; Isaac d’Israeli’s Bradenham; and Cowper’s Olney.
