genAI’s turning us in Warhammer 40 K’s tech-priests… “No longer the master of its creations, the Cult Mechanicus is enslaved to the past. It maintains the glories of yesteryear with rite, dogma and edict instead of true discernment and comprehension.”

The biggest part of "writing the code" was/is gaining an understanding of the system you’re building, but more often, extending. Especially when working with mature/“brownfield" (dislike this term a lot) systems. If you say you're not reading the code anymore without telling me how you’re […]

Has anyone researched the effect of modern car design on people’s moods/psyche/mindset? The angry/aggressive head light design makes moving through a city feeling like wading through an angry/aggressive crowd that doesn’t want you to be there at all. I can’t be the only one seeing angry faces […]

I'm looking for a web/iOS app that helps me keep track of the passage of time and (life) events. Fot instance, when did I meet my friend for the last time? Was it 3 or 4 weeks ago? How long have I been swimming? 3 or 4 years? When did we go to country Y on holiday for the last time? I’ve […]

In the (very) end, the genAI debate might split on do you like to work on software alone, or in a community because hearing “I don’t know, Claude made it” when asking “That’s nice, how did you make it?” tires real quick.

On the bright side: genAI’s sure making developers and other software folks talk about their 🌈 feelings ☔️ and that is, honestly (100%!), a good thing. It’s OK to feel things. NOT feeling things is what gets us in massive trouble. Again and again. So, please feel, and act accordingly.

I kept forgetting the locker numbers that I got from my local swimming pool’s system when I went for a swim. To remember them, I taught my mind a trick: link them to a fact from my life. These days the associations appear automatically. I got the number 9 tonight, and my mind flashed 50 at me […]

PRs should be donations of someone's time and expertise. Not someone's donation of tokens bought from Anthropic/Google/OpenAI/whomever. *IF* we wanted to AI generate PRs at all (and we do not) then the useful way would be for someone to give use money to use an AI. What is step 2 after the PR […]

@sue Not it’s not ideal at all… GenAI’s also sucked the air of any organic communal learning that was happening because most folks are chatting with their bot instead of their colleagues, and many of the chats that do happen are about genAI vs. the rest of software engineering. I want to say […]
