If you’re at a loose end in Glasgow tomorrow why not come along and consider the politics of statues, memorialisation and empire with us @govanhillbaths.bsky.social govanhillbaths.com/what-we-do/g...

Delighted to share that @edinburghup.bsky.social will publish The Glasgow Herald: Journalism, Culture, Memory. This book will build on my PhD and continue to foreground the voices of Scottish journalists and the communities they built - from the pub to the print room - on a bigger historical canvas.

This issue here is that you’d read these headlines and think he’d said something vaguely off colour. The vitriol and hate implicit in what he actually said means he has no place in public life - @scotnational.bsky.social 100% correct to publish.

I did a 360 turn after taking this and saw the vacant former Herald building. The clearing of central Glasgow through neglect, apathy, and greed continues.

Pains me to call out colleagues but I can’t see any pedagogical or creative practice justification for this, even as a festive lark. Teaching students that ‘creation’ doesn’t involve craft or labour is an ethical failure that could only happen in a sector that has lost sight of its public purpose.

How does the inclusion of this (speculative) detail about the suspect’s partner serve the public interest?

Something a bit queasy about the framing of Scotland as a theme here. Is it really beyond the powers of the BBC - as it moves cultural programming up here - to have a Scottish guest presenter/producer? Loads of cringy and weird chat about Braveheart and Trainspotting could have been avoided🙄

Reading this popular genre of takes shows how many smart people are still living in a bygone era. Pointing out the hypocrisy of a movement intent on dismantling rights smacks of debating society smugness. The double standard *is the point* and the racial, gendered, class lines are barely concealed.

I passed my PhD with no corrections today (and was also awarded some free jam).
