We report: after an afternoon of rain, and with the expectancy of a rainy night as well, the sun makes an appearance at sunset. Our expert has rolled down the car window, and it smells cold; the humidity is crisp instead of muggy. The light is warm in comparison.
Digital painting of a sunset sky, voluminous orange clouds with scraggly edges, dark purple in the shade, with yellow highlights. The sky behind them is a washed out blue. There are a few black birds scattered across the frame.

Would you really like to live in a society where you have no responsibility and no freedom, no choice, only the false option of obedience to the law, or disobedience followed by punishment? Would you really want to go live in a prison?

We report: the clouds gathered at such a slow, measured pace that we only ended up noticing them from how dark it had become. We were examining the sphagnum moss in a puddle, and it gradually became more difficult to even see. Just like this, the rain started too.
Digital painting of a dark grey, cloudy sky over the moor. The sky is lighter just above the horizon. The moor is full of ferns, green, brown and yellow, bushes and a few small, bare trees.

We report: this is rain far away, late, and somehow in the path of the sunshine this time as well. It is dry where we are (it feels humid, but under the threshold for precipitation), and we think the wind is pushing the situation away from us. Our eyes are stuck to the horizon.
Digital painting of a sunset sky: large grey-purple clouds are taking up most of the frame, with precipitation falling underneath, straight down the middle of the clouds. The sky is bright pink right where the rain is falling. There are a few other spots across the frame that are lit pale orange.

We report: it rains sporadically throughout the day, sometimes for an hour, sometimes a minute. We understand why looking at the clouds which are responsible for the precipitation; the rain does not look like it knows where it is going, even stopping mid-air here and there.
Digital painting of a complex sky, large rain clouds floating in a bright blue sky. The rain is visible beneath the clouds, wide arcs hit by the light in random patterns. There are more clouds in the distance, the same shades of white and grey.

Saturn "Storm Watch" - From Val Klavans (valklavans.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/nvBf5d
This is an approximate true color view of Saturn. Saturn's north polar hexagon stands out prominently while the planet casts a shadow upon its rings.

This composite is made of images that were taken by Cassini's camera system, the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) on May 04, 2014 and received on Earth May 05, 2014. The camera was pointing toward SATURN at approximately 1,837,403 miles (2,957,013 kilometers) away, and the images were taken using the CB2, BL1, MT3, MT2, CL1 and CL2 filters.

We report: there is a bit of wind, and a lot of sunshine, humidity as well as we get to the later part of the afternoon. We are getting familiar with this feeling again - autumn and spring, when we are not sure whether we are hot or cold, or both at the same time.
Digital painting of a partly cloudy, deep blue sky: the clouds have jagged edges, brightly outlined in white. There are clear sun rays coming from the lower part of the frame, splitting after meeting the clouds.

We report: the light is alive in the clouds at dawn, flowing through the veins created by the few gaps. It keeps transforming in the minutes we get to watch it. It loses the pink, and it gets weaker when it turns blue instead. Our expert, for once, decides to go back to sleep.

We report: we could not see much of the sky until the street lights got turned off. From there, the stars also first appeared out of our sight, and then in the white of our eyes, until they reached the middle of our pupils. We found they shone icily in an anodised sky.
Digital painting of a night sky: it is a dark, bluish grey, filled with bright stars. There are dark trees and bushes rising into the frame.

We report: mid-morning, the sky wrinkles and begins shrivelling up in some places. It was already a muggy day, but now, we feel a buzz settle in the back of our head. The humidity is wrapping itself around us, getting more stifling as the sun keeps moving higher in the sky.

We report: we are walking at cloud-pace today. We get the exact amount of rain that the clouds are able to make, and later on, we only get the sun that these same clouds will let through. We feel like we have travelled a lot, even though the landscape has not changed much.
Digital painting of a sprawling countryside landscape: the sky is partly cloudy, slightly hazy, with fluffy white clouds. It is sunny, and the trees are casting long shadows on the green fields.

We report: the humidity of this evening has bloomed into bright colours, so that even our tired eyes cannot help but awaken in the light. We feel cold, but we can tell this is more on us than the light breeze. Later on, we watch the sun slide off each layer of clouds, one by one.
Digital painting of a sunset sky: a background of dark grey clouds, with the sun catching on dozens of individual spots, turning them bright orange. There is a bright yellow strip of clear sky at the bottom of the frame.

We report: there are flocks of birds in the sky at nightfall again. The days are still warm, but they are getting short, enough that we have to look out for the height of the sun in the late afternoons. Our export reminds us that the autumn equinox is in a few days.
Digital painting of a twilight sky, a gradient of blue to pastel yellow; there are long clouds spread out across the sky, with traces of pink still lingering there. There is a half moon glowing behind the clouds, and a flock of birds in the distance.

We report: since we came up to the mountains, we are now in the land of the clouds. Although one might refer to this weather as « a downpour », we like to think that we are « mapping the clouds ». We have not been able to take notes in the heavy rain, but we are paying attention.

We report: it rained a lot, and our clothes have yet to dry completely. Even then, although we can feel our damp socks in our shoes, it feels like a new day when the sun comes out. It is brighter for the way it lives in puddles, in raindrops that are still suspended to the trees.
Digital painting of a sunny countryside landscape: a path splitting into two, one that leads to an empty field, and one disappears into the trees. The sky is blue, with a layer of grey clouds at the top, and a layer of white ones at the bottom. The sun is low, but the trees and the field are catching the sunlight.

We report: the sun is a few degrees above the horizon, melting into the atmosphere. Because it is this low, we are exceptionally able to see its shimmering corona with the naked eye. We realise that we still should probably not be looking at the sun for this long.

Saturn Ring Particles - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/QL9DSk
These things always have a way of looking vaguely wrong. We don't know what Saturn's rings look like up close, though they are simple to describe. This section is comprised of meter-sized blocks of pure water ice. We do know what water ice looks like, but how does it go from block of ice to the intricate ring system of Saturn?

Perhaps one day we will find out, but for now all we have is art. I doubt mine will be any closer to the truth. If we do ever get pictures, we can compare all the depictions and see who was closest.

Future travelers should avoid passing too close to the rings. There are many depictions of the asteroid belt in science fiction movies looking something like this. In reality, the asteroid belt is almost entirely empty space which makes it a lot safer than Saturn's rings.

There is a chance that the Cassini spacecraft could strike one of these particles during the final phase of its mission, but the scientists are very good at their jobs and made sure to minimize the risk so that all continues as planned. It's certainly not traveling anywhere near the larger pieces, but even a very tiny one could really do some damage. Cassini's mission will end this September, and a lot of people will cry. I might be one of them.

I used a particle system in Blender to create a basic image and then did some digital painting to make it look a little less like a 3D render.

This was guest blogged over at The Planetary Society: www.planetary.org/blogs/guest-blogs/2017/1...

We report: this is more of the raking September light that is so alluring to us. Today, the clouds are also showing proclivities when it comes to geometry; we think that we might find words written in the sky any minute now. It is chilly enough for long sleeves.
