Toronto Blue Jays fan since the 80s. Always optimistic, because there’s no crying in baseball.

That was wonderful. Thanks, Max.

Also: A moment of appreciation for the Blue Jays broadcast crew. Jamie Campbell is a prince. We don't deserve Hazel Mae. Caleb Joseph and Madison Shipman are both excellent analysts. Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall are worthy heirs to Tom and Jerry in the booth, and I mean that as the highest praise.

Glad to hear Caleb Joseph stick up for John Schneider. It's not on the manager that the team was plagued by injuries, or that Vladdy was a shadow of himself (probably because of injuries). Schneider did a fine job navigating a brutal season. He's a good one.

I have a weekly games night with friends on Tuesdays, so when I shut down the Xbox and checked my feed, I... felt no need to put tonight's game on.

Setting up a glorious bottom of the 9th. I love it. (weeps silently)

We all knew it off the bat, too. Hell yeah. This feels like a game from last year, when it felt like they could (and really should) come back from a couple runs down.

So sweet to see Vlad's teammates delighted for him. And that curtain call! Everyone loves the guy.

It is patently absurd to send a representative of the contemptuous administration that keeps threatening to invade us to attend a ceremony honouring Canadians for welcoming Americans. Of course locals are mad! Who is this for?

Blue Jays fans chanting "LAKE ONTARIO!" in the stands while the Mariners are pitching? You absolutely love to see it

Buck Martinez is the best of us. I’ve seen what he means to people, but also how he treats people. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Hall of Famer or the new guy, he makes you feel like you belong in the room. I was that new guy once. This is so deserved. What a man. What a life.

@keeganmatheson.bsky.social's article on Myles Straw's baseball card obsession is quite wonderful: www.mlb.com/bluejays/new...

Card collecting both a 'hobby and semi-obsession' for Straw
TORONTO -- Myles Straw is not just a card collector; he is a connoisseur. To a fellow collector, the shelves of his locker are like wings of an art museum. He might pull a baseball card out of his poc...

Another mark of Kevin Kiermaier's greatness as a CF? He played half his games at the Trop, tracking down flies in a stadium where they vanish in the roof like it's a satellite office of the Bermuda triangle. He would've been an elite CF on any team, but let's appreciate the degree of difficulty.

I know Apple's MLB broadcast considers the national anthems a commercial break, but still, cutting away from "O Canada" to a Gerrit Cole sizzle reel felt insulting.

I don't care if Bluesky's numbers are down. I use it to follow a few hundred weirdos who post too much. If this place folds they'll move someplace else and I'll follow them. You don't have to care if your baseball team makes money and you don't have to care if your social media platform is growing.

Thank God they won that game, because otherwise I'd lie awake all night grinding my teeth over that call.

Once this goes to New York, I guess there's no way to play the game under protest. (Is that even still a thing? Has that ever worked?) But in any case, this call is clearly a pile of molten bullshit.

I remember when Kyle Schwarber was picked 4th overall in the 2014 draft, and pundits were like, "This is a HUGE reach by the Cubs. What are they doing?" Welp! (The Jays took Jeff Hoffman with the 9th pick, and Max Pentecost--who retired in 2019 before making the MLB--with the 11th pick.)

My biggest annoyance here isn’t with Phillie fans. I’d been stewing all day about the U.S. business interests who preach about our “friendship” while completely eliding the reasons why Canadians have stopped patronizing them.

Loved that comeback win today! Still mildly annoyed by the weak return for Gausman. Go Jays!

I really got back into the Jays in 2012 and 2013. So I was closely following the draft in 2014 when they took Jeff Hoffman 9th overall. Was excited to see him finally pitch for the Jays. Will remember him for more than just that one pitch, which wasn't terrible. Farewell, Jeff!

So the Cubs gave up their #2 prospect for Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor, but the Jays got two barely ranked, zero-power guys for Gausman? I wouldn't expect their #2 prospect for Gaus, but... the return feels even lighter now.

The Nimmala-for-Soriano trade (ignore the two throw-ins for a moment) this morning reminds me of the Moreno-for-Varsho trade: Giving up a top prospect to fill an area of need. Moreno turned into a solid regular. Varsho was an important part of last year's run. No regrets.

I liked the Varsho-for-Marino trade. We had Kirk and Jansen, and we needed good outfield defense. I loved Varsha's elite glove, smart baserunning, and "solid guy" vibe. Maybe because so many shat on him in that first season (he struggled), he became one of my favourites.

Dreaming on prospects is fun, but more fun is winning MLB games I actually watch. I have a hunch the Jays prefer Jojo Parker to Nimmala, and they're selling high on the latter. So Nimmala, plus two guys who apparently exist, for 2+ years of an excellent starter? Love it.

Five years ago I thought, "Why'd they sign Gausman when Robbie Ray just won the Cy Young Award?" That's one of my touchstones for "the front office knows more about these guys than me." I hope Gaus comes back next year, but since there were no extension talks, that feels unlikely.

And what a day to start posting! Trade deadline day is thrilling when you're buying, gutting (but also feels like a relief) when you're selling. And this year we're doing both!

About me: I'm as old as the team. Grew up loving the Jays, including (of course) Willie Upshaw. Got to attend a couple of World Series games in '92 and '93, up in the 500s. Lost track of the team after the '94 strike, got back into them in 2012. Now I'm a lifer.
