Fixing a gap in my classic game experiences this evening. I never owned an N64 back in the day, so missed out on Starfox. Playing the remaster on the Switch 2 and I can instantly feel why this was a classic for folks. Fun gameplay and the new visuals make it feel like a modern game.

This might not be the best mini I've ever painted, but it feels like an important one. He's been sat undercoated on my desk for six months. Earlier this year I had health issues that have left me with some permanent visual aberrations in my eyesight. Not the worst, but horrible for painting ...

A painted Warhammer miniature - The Steel Rook, a Knight holding an axe. There is a crow on a tree branch next to him.

I know we can moan about modern monetization practices, but I think I’ve spent the virtual equivalent of a 1980s mortgage in continues getting through the old Megaman games on this thing. This really was ‘pay to win’ design.

A recent impulse purchase was this Samtronuc arcade machine. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality and feel, and it comes loaded with thousands of old arcade games. Lots of nostalgia being served! Bonus - I don’t need to feed countless coins in to progress!

First couple of hours into Star Wars Zero Company and it's done a great job pulling me in. The characters feel interesting straight from the start which helps, and the X-Com inspired gameplay gives a good first impression. Looking forward to playing much more of this one.

Nostalgic fun playing the remaster of Defender of the Crown this afternoon. Spent a lot of time with the original on the Amiga in the late 80s. The mechanics do feel 40 years old, and it's still hard (I swear I never beat it as a kid) but I appreciate the modern coat of paint on a classic.

Back in the US for a couple of weeks. Day one jet lag was fought with a visit to Frank & Sons Collectibles Show, so my wallet could take a minor beating. It’s a fun space to just wander around. Lots of nostalgia to soak up.

Finally got to see the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary. Great version of the story. Kept all the charm of the book and managed a lighter tone without feeling unfaithful to the source material. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

World cup fever led me to check out GOALS over the last few days. It plays pretty well and I've had some fun finding my feet. I do wish it wasn't so clearly taking the FIFA / EAFC mold and reworking from there, as it has inherited many of the mechanical gripes I've had with EA's effort for years.

Forza Horizon 6 is a gorgeous arcade racer. I'm terrible at the actual racing, but as is tradition in Forza Horizon games, it still lets me have a ton of fun racing around it's Japanese / Tokyo inspired map. When you can play on the highest graphical settings it is exceptional.

Can a game work as pure, unadulterated, 100% vibes? Mixtape would suggest the answer is yes! Wonderful little game. Tight, beautiful, great voice work, and the soundtrack stands up to being at the core of the experience. Really enjoyed it.

Got to play through the opening sections of Replaced this evening. Gorgeous looking 2D side-scroller. I'm old enough that it reminds me of games like Flashback. The controls are a touch clunky in places, and the combat simple, but the vibe elevates it above the sum of it's parts for me.

It hasn't been a season with much to cheer, but now at least we have some hope. I suspect Leeds or Forest may be more likely to be in peril than Spurs if we are to escape, assuming they get some kind of 'bounce' with De Zerbi coming in, but it's going to be a nervy run-in! #WHU #COYI

Played a few runs through Absolum today, which feels like someone fused classic Golden Axe gameplay with Hades core loop. Love the style and animations. Also nostalgia'd out when they dropped a ride-able dinosaur into the mix, a true nod to Golden Axe. Nice to see this genre re-emerge a little!

You kind of knew when playing Disco Elysium that it was going to influence and inspire. In Esoteric Ebb you can definitely see both, fused with some genuine affection for the tabletop experience of D&D. Just with your personified stats 'speaking' as your party might. Interesting game so far!
