but i have to hope this reasoning at least moves the actual thinking into the right direction for a breakthrough

when im working on a problem, the solution or steps to the solution just pop into my mind and i can not give a non-bs reason why i came up with that solution. if i get to the point where i have to recruit my mental voice and have it chain words in a coherent way, i know the task is too hard

f you did not know anything about damselflies, could you figure out from first principles which of these was male and which female?

im not sure if it can happen within my lifetime but it would be neat to see a european insect start mimicking the asian hornet. there is already a fly that mimicks european hornets. very rapid color evolution has happened in fruit flies but mostly through simple regulatory mutations

the decoy needs to be someone with large, attractive nostrils and ear canals since the bees are stingless and defend themselves by crawling into orifices and biting

i would like to go to south america and encounter a new species of carnivorous bee so that i can name it trigona venatricula (little huntress), i think that would be a cute name

this is something i have changed my mind on recently. i think powerful LLMs should roll into a ball like frightened isopods more often when they encounter ambiguity. ofc there is a lot of pressure from consumers for them not do that

this stinkbug reached its legs and antennae out for me, i let it climb on my finger. it started probing me with the proboscis which scared me so much i put it back down. it reached out again and i offered my finger a second time and it seemed to lose interest

the cutest bees are polyester bees. they look like honey bee plushies, often with more saturated colors and they are very animated

part of that is semantics. increasing the expression of a gene is also regulating it. but also you can down regulate down regulators, resulting in more expression of the regulators target. the regulatory grammar gets complex real quick

1. A bit of evolutionary biology. I'm really intrigued by a new perspective piece from Steve Frank that explores connections between how natural selection creates systems that generalize and recent work in machine learning about the surprising capabilities of massively overparameterized systems.

most evolutionary novelty is regulatory. you can see this nicely in arthropodes, mostly shared genomes achieve high morphological diversity by tuning the activity of genes. the same gene expressed throughout all of development achieves different results than the same gene expressed only briefly

i saw some bumblebees engage in nectar robbing. they chew holes into the sides of flowers for which they are too fat to fit in. smaller bees which can not chew holes themselves may stick their tongues into the existing ones made by carpenter or bumblebees

i think the heatwave and flower die-off force the bees to compete for scarcer resources, usually they avoid each other more. also they seem to be calmer with their con-specifics. pairs of bombus hortorum are peaceful, while the frantic behavior of b. lapidarius causes more friction
